The Opportunity


The Vice President of Just Climate and Energy Transitions Portfolio is a vital leadership position at Abt Associates within the Global Development Group. You are focused on client engagement, portfolio growth strategy, sales and revenue growth, and profit and loss management. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for the US International Market in the Global Development Group, you will partner and collaborate with the solutions organization, the delivery group and the growth office to position and grow the portfolio. You will advance Abt’s reputational capital by actively engaging in thought leadership, industry associations, and client events and expanding existing USAID client relationships while diversifying into new client areas where possible.


The Vice President is focused on creating and executing the Just Climate and Energy Transitions strategy that will lead to retaining and expanding current client relationships, driving increased revenue and sales, earning sustainable contract margins, and informing and influencing our technical solutions and offerings roadmap. Through their external engagement, they will translate client priorities into the portfolio strategy and execution plans as well as leverage Abt’s core capabilities in Research Monitoring & Evaluation, Technical Assistance and Implementation, Digital and Data Services and Equity to meet client needs.


Core Responsibilities


  • Ensures alignment with Group and Company strategy and objectives.
  • Leverages matrixed capabilities to maximize client satisfaction, quality of delivery and business growth.
  • Sets the strategic growth plan for the US Government International Just Climate and Energy Transitions Portfolio.
  • Engages and leverages the solutions organization to bring state of the art solutions to existing and new clients.
  • Has responsibility to meet or exceed financial targets for sales and revenue and profit growth, leveraging the excellent project financial management conducted by the delivery group.
  • Demonstrate leadership support for the implementation of key equity, diversity and inclusion policies.
  • Conducts business and technical briefings for senior and top management and for external representatives.
  • Advance Abt’s reputational capital by actively engaging in thought leadership through industry associations, and client events.
  • Develops a short- and long-term growth strategy with related tactical execution plans that will drive top line and bottom-line growth for the portfolio.
  • Builds and manages an effective and efficient portfolio team focused on high quality financial performance, and client relationship development.
  • Drives growth in collaboration with the Group, Department and Solutions Organization resources; delivering a strong book-to-bill, re-compete wins, and YoY new business growth.
  • Understands the competitive landscape for the Portfolio and reviews organizational capabilities, and development/execution of strategies, to improve the competitiveness of the portfolio through actions such as professional growth and development, strategic hiring, and strategic partnering.
  • Lead a team of Client Account Leaders and portfolio-aligned experts and provide direction and support in the development of growth strategies and informs solution roadmaps geared towards achieving and exceeding financial and mission objectives centered around client priorities.
  • Builds and maintains a strong working relationship with the Global Delivery Practice Leads engaging their support on growth strategy and execution when required and monitoring project health metrics which are critical to P&L and growth plans. Work with leaders in the Delivery organization if project health metrics are at risk, noting accountability for project performance sits in the Delivery Organization.
  • Align our people to our vision through ongoing investments in diversity and inclusion initiatives, leadership development and employee engagement.


What We Value


  • Understanding of the competitive landscape in the Portfolio and experience working in Climate, Energy, and Environment required.
  • Proven track record of meeting and exceeding financial goals for a mid to large size client account.
  • Experience leading financial management activities, including target-setting, in line with strategic objectives.
  • Lived experience and/or long-term overseas work experience on a donor-funded program preferred.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining strong client relationships, including problem-solving complex project issues with client relationship in mind.
  • Successful track record leading winning proposals, particularly with USAID funded bi-lateral and multi-country programs.
  • History of building and maintaining successful relationships internally and externally.
  • Bachelor’s Degree + Fifteen years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Twelve years of relevant experience, or PhD + Ten years of relevant experience

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of approximately $213,785 to $277,925 and may vary by ten percent depending on candidate geographic location. Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis.
