Job Description
At our organization, our purpose fuels our passion. We are a nonprofit with a mission to safeguard children from exploitation and abuse. This mission isn't just a job—it's a shared commitment that empowers us to take on demanding challenges with unwavering determination.
Here, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate and grow alongside exceptional minds in technology, data, and business. Along with our network of independent partners, NGOs, and law enforcement agencies, we're dedicated to creating technology that secures children's futures. We're searching for creative problem solvers who are driven to tackle some of today's most pressing issues. Join us in a remote setting that prioritizes well-being, care, and empathy.
In 2019, we took the TED stage to announce our bold ambition: to eliminate child sexual abuse material from the internet. Join our ranks and contribute to transforming this aspiration into reality, building a world where every child can thrive in safety, curiosity, and joy.
About The Role
As the VP of External Affairs, you'll hold a pivotal leadership position reporting directly to the CEO. In this role, you'll oversee the Marketing and Communications team, the Philanthropy team, and the Policy team. These teams collectively work to amplify the Thorn brand, raise awareness, foster demand for our products, expand our donor base, and cultivate relationships with policymakers, industry leaders, and other crucial stakeholders. This unique opportunity sits at the intersection of technology and social impact, enabling you to play a vital part in Thorn's 5-year strategic growth plan. Your contributions will drive Thorn's progress towards essential milestones on our path to eradicating online child sexual abuse.
This position demands global travel to build and nurture key relationships. Additionally, there may be company-wide gatherings, smaller team meetings, team-building events, and attendance at specific conferences. The role is based in the US, with some travel required (40%).
Your Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership:
Lead a diverse team of experts in marketing, communications, philanthropy, and policy, fostering teamwork, growth, and measurable impact.
Collaborate closely with Thorn's leadership team, removing obstacles and fostering positive connections across the organization.
Shape Thorn's strategic plan, contributing your expertise from an external affairs perspective to address long-term business needs.
Guide annual planning cycles and define performance metrics aligned with short and long-term business goals.
Fundraising
Expand our donor network and partner with the CEO to secure $11M annually from major donors, including comfortable asks for seven-figure contributions.
Initiate a $35M five-year capital campaign to bolster our organization until we reach our revenue target of $15M/year.
Marketing Communications
Lead a dynamic product marketing team, devising a marketing strategy linked to broader organizational growth objectives.
Craft a comprehensive vision for Thorn's external presence, enhancing our global recognition as a trusted, well-funded brand renowned for impactful work in ending online child sexual abuse.
Interact with senior executives, foreign officials, political leaders, celebrities, and other influential stakeholders.
Policy
Drive legislative priorities in the US and the European Union, providing support on global policy matters as required.
Who We're Seeking
You possess 15-20+ years of experience across diverse external affairs functions, including marketing, communications, policy, and philanthropy.
You offer at least 10 years of executive leadership experience (equivalent to a VP role), with an advantage in high-growth environments.
You lead with empathy and collaboration, working seamlessly with fellow leadership members and external stakeholders.
Your proven influence drives change within management teams and organizations, aligning people strategy with values and objectives.
You are deeply committed to prioritizing the children we serve in every aspect of your work.
You naturally inspire teams and cultivate growth mindsets, fostering a positive culture of learning.
You have a track record of successful philanthropic or venture capital fundraising.
You excel at building relationships, showcasing high emotional intelligence.
You have led high-growth product marketing teams effectively.
You've navigated complex fields involving media relations, government interactions, and stakeholder engagement to advance organizational goals.
Your executive communication skills are strong, reflecting critical thinking, effective communication, and a well-formed perspective.
You're a skilled storyteller with excellent written and verbal communication abilities, capable of simplifying complex topics even in ambiguous situations.
You possess knowledge of the EU and US policy systems, with experience engaging EU legislators and US policymakers being a plus.
Compensation And Benefits
Estimated compensation for this role ranges from $188,000 to $248,000. This range considers various factors, including location, skills, experience, training, certifications, and licensure.
Our remote-first work model emphasizes working from home, with occasional travel expectations for company gatherings, team meetings, events, and conferences.
