UnitedHealthcare has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Underwriting Team Lead for Life, AD&D, Short Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, FMLA and PFML. The Underwriting Team Lead will be responsible for managing New Business and Renewal results for groups up to 5,000 lives. The Underwriting Team Lead will contribute to the achievement of UnitedHealthcare’s sales, persistency and profitability goals for our Key Account segment.
This key person will conduct detailed analysis to establish profitable and competitive rates and plan characteristics given the unique circumstances and needs of each group customer. This individual will show superior technical knowledge when using prior claims experience, making sound decision with critical and analytical skills.
You will have the flexibility to work remotely* as you take on some tough challenges.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Prices and offers plan changes, produces experience analysis, and responds to inquiries from the Sales team, broker, customer, and other partners
- Foster and promote a culture of Underwriting Excellence while creating an environment of openness, honesty, respect, and champions different ideas while collaborating in an inclusive manner
- Manage New Business quotes and Renewals by analyzing plan design, demographics, and experience information to establish profitable and competitive premium levels
- Train, mentor and provide decision making assistance to underwriters. Review work of underwriters to ensure consistency and sound development of rates and underwriting decisions
- An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions
- Initiate and manage project around process improvement initiatives improving productivity and accuracy
- Solid business and financial acumen with the ability to develop and execute on underwriting strategies in support of financial business plans while managing risk, pricing, and the P&L performance
- Continuous engagement with cross functional leaders driving consistency, strategic alignment, ongoing assessment of the marketplace, operational efficiencies and balanced product offering ensuring continued profitability and growth
- Underwrites renewals by reviewing current plan's premium history, claims history, and company financial condition to determine appropriate renewal action
- Collaborate with leaders and key stakeholders to ensure strategies are executed to surpass key objectives for all products of the business including long term profitability for the organization

Qualifications -
Required Qualifications:
- Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office Suite (including Word, Excel & Teams)
- 2+ years of experience leading and/or managing a team (coaching and development)
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent underwriting work experience
- Experience with groups up to 5,000 Lives
- Experience successfully collaborating with internal and external partners to develop appropriate case strategies
- 5+ years of experience in Life, Disability and Supplemental Health underwriting (manual and experience rating)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient knowledge of products including product, plan designs, pricing, and various funding arrangements
- Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills
- Proven financial mindset to help make the best decisions
- Proven goal-oriented and delivers outcomes
- BA in Math, Finance or Business
- Proficient with MS Office suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
- Proven ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win
- Proven ability to own our work and following through on commitments
- Proven high energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit
- Proven ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Proven team spirit and desire to work collaboratively
- Proven ability to decipher and execute within a fluid and changing business environment
- Demonstrates excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island or Washington residents is $85,000 to $167,300. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
