Job Description
Underwriting Line of Business Manager
Work Remotely from Oregon, Washington, Idaho or Utah
Primary Job Purpose
This position provides leadership across all plans in designing, managing and implementing division and corporate level projects and administrative policies related to a designated underwriting line of business. Responsible for the management of multiple concurrent projects and facilitation of the underwriting subject matter expert teams.
General Functions and Outcomes
  • Establish and lead consolidated teams of subject matter experts. to develop best practices by line of business.
  • Analyze statutory and regulatory requirements to determine operational impact.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and subject matter expert for the designated line of business in corporate and divisional underwriting project planning.
  • Support development, design and maintenance of systems used by underwriting such as SalesForce, Stepwise, MedPlus, shared drives, renewal templates and rating model and tools.
  • Direct the development and implementation of policies and procedures in compliance with corporate strategies and legislative mandates.
  • Coordinate response to internal and external audits.
  • Coordinate and support training as needed for policies, procedures and systems.
  • Provide leadership in the improvement of work processes as needed.
  • Supports the development of and consistent administration of policies and procedures for the designated line of business.
  • Acts as the liaison between various internal departments ensuring open communication and awareness of all parties concerning consolidated UW activities and projects.
  • Participate in the planning, development and implementation of new products.
  • Direct the development and ongoing review of necessary underwriting reports.
  • Analyze and understand the impact of policy recommendations relative to each state’s strategic market plan including membership and financial goals.
  • Identifies and presents organizational, procedural and operational changes to underwriting staff.
  • Develop and maintain a repository for policy documentation for all lines of business.
  • Participate in the review and updating of contracts as needed.
  • Responsible for reviewing, making recommendations prioritize project requests in support of LOB.
  • Primary contact regarding changes to the GAF and CRM system which may impact underwriting.
  • Communicate with Sales, Membership, Finance and other stakeholders to identify impact of underwriting policies.
  • Lead and serve on divisional and cross-divisional committees as requested.
Minimum Requirements
  • Strong analytical ability with experience in applying analytic techniques to provide depth-analysis and recommendations using critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Comfortable working with complex computer software systems.
  • Proven organize, plan, prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with executives, managers, supervisors, market representatives and regulators.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team members inside and outside the division, work with ambiguity and build successful relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • In depth knowledge of underwriting principles, insurance operations and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and lead strategy planning sessions within team and business partners.
  • Advanced knowledge of insurance-related policy development, communication, documentation and compliance.
  • Strong negotiation skills with proven ability to generate consensus on decisions.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to direct activities of others both individually and within a team.
Normally to be proficient in the competencies listed above
The Underwriting Line of Business Manager will have a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Math, Public Policy or related field with 8 years’ experience in underwriting, project management or policy analysis in health insurance or equivalent combination of education and job related experience.
Work Environment
Work performed in a typical office environment with no unusual physical requirements.
The expected hiring range for a Underwriting Line of Business Manager is $97,000.00 - $132,000.00 depending on skills, experience, education, and training; relevant licensure / certifications; performance history; and work location. The bonus target for this position is 15%. The current full salary range for this role is $91,500.00 to $149,000.00.
