CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
Under general supervision of the Lasher Laboratory Manager, the Sr. Laboratory Technician performs a variety of technical, laboratory, and necropsy duties in support of the poultry diagnostic lab and research programs. The principal emphasis is applying advanced technical skills to laboratory preparations and conducting analyses, tests, and experiment protocols. Independent judgement, problem solving skills, and practical understanding of the application of scientific techniques are required. A background in poultry disease diagnostics is preferred.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and maintain laboratory records. Prepare culture media, samples for analysis, chemicals, reagents, etc.
- Successfully obtain and maintain USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) diagnostic assay certification which includes passing annual proficiency testing.
- Perform a variety of technical laboratory testing including but not limited to the areas of Molecular Diagnostics, Serology, Bacteriology, and Necropsy.
- Set up equipment, instruments, and materials used in performing various tests or experiments in the laboratory or in the field.
- Responsible for complying with university policies, procedures, and best practices regarding protecting data and following UD data governance rules.
- Maintain and operate laboratory equipment; clean and sterilize instruments and glassware.
- Assist with avian necropsy related duties as needed.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Enter data and perform computations using prepared spreadsheets or database programs.
- Document results of testing using Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work and precisely follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and industry representatives.
- Ability to train and instruct others.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, techniques, procedures, and record keeping.
- Proficient computer skills, including the ability to input, edit, save, and retrieve data.
- Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
- Experience with scientific math including conversions.
- High School Diploma or GED with three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Familiarity with ISO standards and a quality management system is preferred.

- Effective communications and interpersonal skills.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- May require occasional evening, weekend and holiday working hours.
- Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials.
- Occasional travel within and out of state training may be required.
- Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
- Ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials.
- With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
- Passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment may be required.
- May require a valid vehicle operator’s license.
