Battelle's Health Research and Analytics (HRA) business line is currently seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to support our government customer, the Navy Bloodborne Infection Management Center (NBIMC), under the direction of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), in Bethesda, MD. This organization serves as the oversight for advising and monitoring activities related to force-wide readiness testing, pre- and post-deployment screening, diagnosis, and care of individuals with Human Immunodeficiency Virus type-1 (HIV) disease. Additionally, NBIMC provides oversight for the tracking activities related to force readiness testing of individuals for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus infection for the Department of the Navy. Battelle shall enable these capabilities and product lines by providing Scientific and Technical Information (STI) deliverables, by performing Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and other Research and Development (R&D) related analytical services.

Job Summary

Performs technical tasks in laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews risk assessment data to plan and implement corrective action under the guidance of a supervisor.
  • Reviews clinical test results to assess accuracy, validity, and completeness and documents findings using existing record keeping systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Monitors results of external quality control testing performed to check that processes, procedures, and products meet the quality requirements, including accuracy of laboratory results.
  • Reviews daily quality control and quality assurance data, recognizes quality assurance problems, and communicates problems to the supervisor.
  • Evaluates the proficiency testing programs to verify the adequacy of testing methods, equipment, processes, and competency of personnel performing proficiency testing.
  • Tracks the trend performance of database applications and generates related reports to support supervisor decision making and/or assist in research investigations.
  • Records results through a variety of data entry modes into laboratory information systems.
  • Establishes and maintains record keeping systems (e.g., specimen accession and retention, instrument maintenance, quality control) for compliance and maintenance of accreditation.

Key Qualifications

  • Knowledge of regulatory licensing, and accrediting agency requirements, and statutes governing clinical laboratory operations sufficient to use in planning, implementing, or monitoring laboratory programs/services (e.g., determining needs, assuring compliance with standards), such as CAP, CLIA, CDC, FDA, and JC standards.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a lead medical laboratory technician with proficiency in reviewing the accuracy of and documenting laboratory tests in health care systems to maintain accurate records.
  • 1-5 years’ work experience as medical laboratory technician.
  • At least 1 year of experience in establishing and monitoring quality assurance programs and activities for the accuracy of laboratory results.
  • Candidate must be certified as MLT or have an associate degree in chemical, Biological Science, Health Science or Microbiology. Candidate certification as MT (ASCP) or equivalent or have a bachelor’s degree in chemical, Biological Science, Health Science or Microbiology is preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience with HIV, Hepatitis B and C testing.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of programs, including Microsoft Excel and Access.
  • Proficient in using information systems including Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and applications for automated data tracking systems.
  • Demonstrates good critical thinking skills.
  • At least 1 year of experience in reviewing risk assessment data to identify and plan corrective action.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent working knowledge and use of computer software systems (such as MHS Genesis, CHCS, AHLTA, MRRS, Cerner and LAN based systems), and the ability to modify software to suit specific needs.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods sufficient to interpret and present data received from Department of Defense (DoD), commercial sources and medical treatment facilities.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.
  • At least 1 year of experience working in quality control and assurance with practical knowledge in proficiency testing, and accreditation to ensure reliability of data, procedures, and analyzers. Knowledge of technical, physiological, and mechanical indicators of malfunction (e.g., test conditions, patient variables) sufficient to locate and correct errors.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of health care professionals and private sector contractors.
