DESCRIPTION
Reporting directly to the Student Life Development Manager of the Student Governments, Auxiliaries, & Services (Previously Associated Student (AS)) Administration and receiving primarily work direction provided by the AS Sr. Graphic Studio Coordinator provides graphic design solutions to Associated Students, its services and commissions, and the UC San Diego campus community. The Graphic Designer will plan, prepare, design, and execute compelling, visually appealing graphics for print and digital communications.
The Sr. Graphic Designer works closely in collaboration with a team of AS Graphic Studio professionals and student staff with a student-centered focus to provide excellent customer service and quality of work at UC San Diego. The graphic designer will independently work on client brand identity and development, create style guides, and adhere to SGAS and University branding guidelines. The Sr. Graphic Designer will apply well-developed consultative skills to advise and make recommendations to students, faculty, and staff regarding the implementation and production of design projects. Using general design/technical knowledge, the designer will meet with clients to define needs, create timelines, and distill complex concepts to conceptualize and create original imagery, format documents, review and finalize files for digital distribution or print production. The Sr. Graphic Designer will apply expertise with graphic design/desktop publishing software, including Adobe Creative Suite and others, to produce illustrations, images, motion graphics, digitally retouch images, visualizations, and photographs for proposals, reports, presentations, posters, social media campaigns and other print/digital formats.
The Sr. Graphic Designer will also work with Triton Outfitters, the Associated Students Store assisting the Triton Outfitters executive team with merchandising, apparel design development, client meetings, getting files ready for print production, and marketing.
While design, brand development, and illustration will comprise the majority of work, the position will perform other related work consists of marketing and communication development plans for projects and basic web design. Attend and assist with Associated Students events as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Strong skills in collaboration to best meet project goals and objectives of clients. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and follow direction/input from supervisory/editorial/support staff members and clients to complete projects as prescribed.
- Strong design, creative and artistic skills, including graphic design, illustration, and brand development for digital and print purposes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver independent recommendations for action.
- Demonstrated knowledge of marketing principles.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in use of various software, programs, and operating systems: MacOS, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Procreate, Social Media platforms, Web Development Tools and content management systems, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite.
- Demonstrated experience with website development, UI/UX. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, and WordPress. Knowledge of current web trends.
- Experience finding, preparing, and editing photos, illustrations, and other graphics for print use.
- Critical thinking skills, advanced organizational skills and proactive problem-solving / problem resolution skills. Demonstrated ability to meet established goals and to recognize problems, conflicts or impact to others, research options, present alternatives, implement solutions and follow-through to ensure goals are met.
- Proven ability to multi-task and handle small to large multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. Ability to prioritize and organize projects and work flow with a high level of professionalism, using initiative, sound judgment, and paying strict attention to detail, to produce publications to meet strict and competing deadlines.
- Graduation from high school, two years of art training, and three years of equivalent experience.
- Ability to mentor and supervise student staff.
- Advanced knowledge of production processes for a variety of media and knowledge of vendor requirements for a variety of products.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.
- Occasional weekend and evening work will be required.
- Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $62,327 - $94,190 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $29.85 - $45.11
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
