Job Purpose

Cat Digital’s Artificial Intelligence team is looking for a talented and motivated Senior Data Scientist to deliver ML/AI-based analytics to support product development for the enterprise as well as condition monitoring for customers. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will use machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and other analytics techniques on time-series machine sensor data and other data to better understand data patterns, failure modes, device health anomalies, and more.

Job Duties

Caterpillar uses quantitative methods such as business simulations, data mining, modeling, statistical techniques, and Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence capabilities to solve real problems. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will be tasked with solving problems of high complexity and business impact.

The principal responsibility of Senior Data Scientist is to participate on cross-functional project teams, provide guidance to the technical direction of the project, and mentor Jr. Data Scientists on the technical approaches being used in order to solve a problem presented by a Caterpillar Business Unit or Service Organization, a Caterpillar Dealer, or a Caterpillar Customer.

The Senior Data Scientist Will

• Demonstrate very good communication skills, being able to explain conclusions to customers with limited knowledge and experience with quantitative analytical methods.
• Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in the application ML/AI methods and digital technology knowledge to solve complex business and technical problems.
• Demonstrate strong initiative to research and apply new methods to exceed customer expectations.
• Report to an Artificial Intelligence team Supervisor and bears primary responsibility for solving the technical and business problem presented through applied analytics.
• Demonstrate thorough knowledge of Caterpillar Inc.; its products and services; its internal systems, processes, and procedures; and its relevant external influences (competitors, laws and regulations, market conditions, etc.) to meet or exceed customer expectations.
• Participate on 3-4 projects concurrently
• Develop good networks within the technical community to enable them to collaborate on technical solutions, obtain resources and cooperation needed, and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team.
• Have a strong focus on continual learning in the Analytics field
• Coach and mentor other Jr. Data Scientists in the creation, validation, and application of statistical models, as well as in implementing digital solutions

Basic Qualifications

• Requires a Master’s degree, preferably in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a similar field with quantitative coursework, and 4-6 years of experience utilizing quantitative analysis is required, or a PhD and 1-3 years of experience in relevant experience.
• 3+ years of experience applying AI/ML to solve technical and business challenges.
• 1+ years of experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.)
• 3+ years of experience applying python (NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, pandas, etc.) programming to solve technical and business challenges.

• Strong initiative to research and apply new methods and digital technologies to exceed customer expectations.
• Experience leading analytics projects connecting data from various business and technical domains.
• Masters, or PhD degree in Aerospace, Applied Statistics, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence & Analytics, Computer Science, Computer Science + X, Engineering (various), Informatics, Information Systems Management, Mathematics, MBA with Technical Undergrad, Predictive Analytics, Statistics, or equivalent technical degree.
• Experience in Generative AI.
• Strong technical and problem-solving skills and evidence of continuous learning in the ML/AI analytics field
• Breadth and depth of knowledge in the application of ML/AI methods to solve problems.
• Excellent presentation and communication skills to communicate effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well as with customers.
• Competency in coaching and mentoring Jr. Data Scientists in the creation, validation, and application of ML/AI models as well as in implementing digital solutions.

Additional Details

This position has the option to be based out of either our Chicago, IL; Peoria, IL or Champaign, IL offices with a flexible hybrid work environment.
