about the role
e.l.f. Cosmetics is currently looking for a detail-oriented, organized and collaborative Sr. Accounting Manager to join our dynamic, high-growth beauty company. This newly created role will report directly to the Assistant Controller.
The Sr. Accounting Manager is responsible for day-to-day financial reporting and the execution of month-end close for all of our Operating Expenses. As one of the leaders on the Accounting team, you will need to apply your experience and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports. This highly visible position will interface frequently with accounting and finance leadership, other departments within e.l.f and with external auditors and service providers.
The ideal candidate has a CPA and brings 7+ years of experience in Accounting, including supervision or management of accounting teams, and at least 3+ years of audit experience from a global or national Accounting firm. Public company experience as well as CPG experience is a plus. This position is based can be based in any of our e.l.f. offices (Oakland, L.A. or NYC) or be fully remote.
Detailed Responsibilities and Requirements
Responsibilities
Operating Expense Accruals
- Lead the monthly accrual process, including the calculation and analysis of accruals for various departments, general accrual for amounts under threshold, and review of invoices received after month end close for potential accrual.
- Increase visibility to our travel and expense program, with a goal of finding cost savings by partnering with Concur, CWT and other vendors that provide travel services
- Partner with business leaders to develop and maintain a robust accrual process that accurately reflects the financial position of the organization.
- Transform existing monthly accrual processes to ensure efficiency and consistency across departments.
- Manage all operational expenses, ensuring appropriate period end cut off, completeness of accounting entries and adherence to company policies and procedures along with US GAAP and SOX requirements.
Corporate Accounting
- Initiate processes and streamline existing processes for efficiency and to sustain future growth of the company.
- Assist in managing the monthly and annual financial statement closing process and reviews preliminary results for variances, reasonability, etc.
- Responsible for the day-to-day accounting which includes reviewing period-end entries and account reconciliations for balance sheet accounts such as bank reconciliations and accrued expenses.
- Primary lead related to Travel & Entertainment including maintaining our Travel & Entertainment Policy, Employee Expense Reporting system, Concur, with an emphasis on alignment of system controls, new and ongoing user training, and strengthening reporting compliance. In addition, partnering with our vendors to find cost savings in our travel program.
- Assist with establishing and maintaining corporate accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure conformance with US GAAP and SOX laws/regulations.
- Key contributor during external audits, which may include reviewing workpapers prepared by accountants/others, submitting requests and coordination to ensure audit timelines are met, and escalating issues as they arise.
- Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents. Verify and analyze business records, transactions, and procedures.
- Prepare supporting documentation for certain financial statements footnotes.
- Safeguard assets and assure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of internal audits, controls, and checks across all departments.
- Review purchase orders and accounts payable entries to identify transactions that need further review, account reclassification, department coding corrections and/or contract/agreement review and documentation.
- Assist in the assessment of system requirements for the accounting department to support organization growth; assist in ERP and other accounting systems implementations.
Technical Accounting Based on US GAAP
- Document key estimates and judgments based on historical trends and benchmarked research.
- Research US GAAP, document thorough analysis and accounting treatment conclusions for non-routine areas.
Project Management and Execution
- Participate in accounting operational effectiveness projects.
- Participate in process and post-system implementation improvement projects.
- Flexibly support the finance and executive team on ad-hoc requests.
- Lead Accounting related system or automation projects.
Requirements
- Public Company experience and/or consumer products company experience a plus
- Strong project management skills
- Strong leader with proven ability to motivate and guide the team to deliver excellent results
- Must have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Flexible to respond to requests and work cross-functionally
- Strong work ethic, integrity, and commitment to excellence.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in Excel and proficiency in Microsoft Office

- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, with 7+ years Accounting experience, including supervision and management of accounting staff.
- Excellent knowledge and application of US GAAP
- Direct experience with Accounting ERP systems (NetSuite and SAP, preferred)
- Possess strong organization and time management skills
- CPA is required with 3+ years of audit experience from a global or national Accounting firm (Big 4 a plus)
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing
- Proven ability to operate and thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth company by maintaining focus, strong organization and time management skills
- Ability to perform tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism
