Job Description

Site Safety Manager II

Reports To: Site Manager

Benefit Classification: Salaried, Exempt

Salary range: $70K - $100K

Travel: 100% onsite


Education Requirements: Four-year occupational safety/health degree; or equivalent combination of training and/or experience. Advanced degrees are a plus. ASP, CSP, or CHST certifications preferred.


Experience Requirements: Five or more years of construction safety experience.


Position Summary: Plans, implements, and supervises large scale project safety, accident, and fire protection programs in compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local program standards. Approximately 75% of work time should be spent in the field conducting assessments, interacting with crews, subcontractors, etc.


Essential Job Functions

  • Acts as a subject matter expert and is a recognized on-site leader. Coaches site teams and employees on how to identify and eliminate hazards.
  • Coordinates and plans corporate safety related training programs to include OSHA 10-hour and OSHA 30-hour trainings, participating when appropriate.
  • Investigates all incidents and safety exposures with the trade superintendents and required foremen and crew down to the root cause.
  • Follows through with injury management, collaborates with supervisors to mitigate claims and exposure to costs with personnel, subcontractors, and equipment.
  • Ensures and assists the site team with executing the Site Safety Program, which includes Job Hazard Analyses (JHA), Daily Field Observations(DFOs), and Stuff That Kills You (STKY) observations throughout the project site.
  • Understands and manages the safety budget associated with the project.
  • Accompanies all safety, health, and insurance inspectors on walk through tours.
  • Ensures all documentation is completed according to corporate and outside safety processes and procedures.
  • Complies with federal, state, local and company safety regulation requirements.
  • Identifies and implements preventative measures in a timely manner at the highest level within the hierarchy of controls, ensuring they are sustained on the project.
  • Teaches (vs. tell) so individuals understand the reasoning behind the desired behaviors.
  • Promotes and supports Blattner’s pause work authority.
  • Complies with the company’s Return-to-Work policy.
  • Participates in daily project safety related discussions with the Site Manager, Assistant Site Manager, and Trade Superintendents.
  • Communicates with personnel and owners with integrity, honesty, and ethics.
  • Mentors and trains new Site Safety Managers and Interns.
  • Engages with the crews and subcontractors to ensure safe work practices are implemented and followed.
  • Collaborates with site supervisory personnel to identify and remedy unsafe working conditions.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with local occupational physicians, EMT's, fire departments, and law enforcement officials.
  • Collaborates with the front-line teams and management to develop methods and practices that will eliminate exposure and build capacity.
  • Collaborates with site supervisory personnel to review all safety documentation to ensure all required records and reports are complete, accurate, and submitted on time.
  • Builds a relationship with the on-site nurse to minimize injury exposure and to coordinate drug and alcohol testing.
  • Observes and assesses work plans, work instructions, and work activities.
  • Works to make safety a value rather than a policy or goal we look to adhere to.
  • Leads incident investigations utilizing Root Cause Analysis and Five Why Analysis.
  • Conducts regular walk-through inspections and assessments of construction area(s).
  • Participates in the creation of trade specific Risk Assessment Matrices, three-week look ahead discussions, and subcontractor alignment meetings.


Other Job Functions

  • Performs additional assignments per supervisor’s direction.
  • Identifies opportunities for streamlining work and reducing waste in order to improve efficiency.

  • Possesses a valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (MVR).

  • Builds strong and open relationships with Site Managers, Trade Superintendents, Foreperson, Project Teams, and others.
  • Recognizes STYKY risk and acts accordingly.
  • Has strong oral, presentational, and written communication skills.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong business acumen along with electrical safety, crane safety, and structural knowledge.
  • Assist in mentoring and developing site and Safety personnel, by identifying needs and encouraging growth and training.
  • Comfortable presenting information to large groups of employees.
