Job Description
Description


Under general supervision, to plan, coordinate, implement, facilitate, and evaluate training and staff development programs for the Sheriff's Office.



Typical Tasks


  • May provide support for a unit of employees in on-the-job-training activities;
  • Determines training requirements, in accordance with Peace Officer Standards (POST) and the Department of Justice;
  • Plans, coordinates, organizes, implements, facilitates, and evaluates training programs and courses, in a variety of subjects specific to law enforcement, including topics such as management and supervision, law enforcement records, first aid, communication skills, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • Maintains clear and concise records, reports, and spreadsheets regarding Sheriff's Office trainings, including those required for POST audits and compliance;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.
  • Previews and evaluates vendor instructional materials;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Researches pertinent subject matter literature and POST guidelines to tailor training content to fit the Sheriff's Office training needs without changing learning objectives;
  • Arranges for training facilities and instructors, and schedules Sheriff's Office employees for trainings;
  • Conducts training and vendor evaluations, analyzes training data, and prepares reports;
  • Writes, edits, and prepares for print, training handbooks, manuals, scripts, participant guides, course handouts, and related materials;


Employment Standards


Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:


Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree. Relevant analytical, administrative, lead, supervisory, or management experience that includes interpreting rules and regulations, gathering data and formulating recommendations, and report writing can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis,


and


Two (2) years of experience planning, organizing, coordinating, and facilitating management, employee, or supervisory training courses in a variety of subjects. This experience must have included determining training needs and training methods, communicating with employees, keeping records of training, and evaluating training results.


Experience working in a law enforcement agency is desirable.


Special Requirements


  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.


Knowledge Of


  • Current adult learning theory and practices and training methods;
  • Law enforcement functions and relationships of the criminal justice system;
  • Computer usage principles, including spreadsheets and related software;
  • Effective methods of using audio/visual equipment or other training aids or materials;
  • Mathematical and statistical computations.
  • Law enforcement training requirements, including Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST);
  • Principles and modern methods of police administration, organization, practices, and procedures;


Ability To


  • Demonstrate active listening skills, speak effectively before large and small groups, and perform the role of facilitator, utilizing group dynamic skills and techniques;
  • Take initiative, reason logically, and be creative in developing and introducing new ideas;
  • Translate training needs and requirements into curriculum, or use other program approaches;
  • Be sensitive when working with a diverse population;
  • Communicate in English effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Organize, coordinate, conduct, facilitate, and evaluate training and staff development programs on a variety of subjects;
  • Formulate specific objectives against which to compare and evaluate results;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Implement POST accredited courses and tailor them to agency needs without changing the learning objectives;
  • Prepare and maintain clear and concise records and reports.
