This is an entry-level, multi-divisional classification for use in Recreation & Parks, Public Works, Water Resources or other related departments. Under direct supervision, performs routine and semiskilled manual work of limited difficulty in the maintenance of: water canals, storm drainage basins, parks/trees, sewers, solid waste, streets, traffic painting, or related areas. Performs a wide variety of duties related to maintenance and equipment operation. A broad range of equipment may be operated. Employees may be required to work on a 24-hour rotational shift basis including weekends, holidays and declared emergencies. Employees are on-call for emergencies after regular hours and must be willing to work overtime. Performs related duties as required.
In addition to the above, the following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of the essential duties of the position. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties:
Development Services:
- Drives and operates a dump truck, or other related equipment in transporting debris, road sweeping and other materials
- Performs all functions associated with used oil collection
- Disassembles and cleans pumps and performs minor repairs when necessary Street Cleaning:
- Maintains saws and operates spray equipment;
- Performs general duties at the sanitary landfill
- Cleans sewer water pipes using hydrocleaner and dump truck
- May be assigned to any Solid Waste field operation such as recycling, wood waste processing, landfill operations, special projects, used oil collection, or a helper on routes
- Installs guardrails and barricades
- Serves as safety personnel at site while Light Equipment Operator is operating equipment
- Assists in attaching, dumping, detaching and replacing all detachable refuse bins on assigned route
- Delineates traffic
- Recognizes and separates personal property from trash for safe keeping with supervision
- Operates related equipment Parks Division:
- Paints curbs to prohibit or restrict parking
- Inspects sewage and storm water lift stations
- Maintains a professional and respectful demeanor during encounters with the public
- Performs general maintenance on equipment
- Picks up trash and debris from homeless encampment sites
- Logs and/or removes abandoned property from safekeeping containers and destroys when specified, fills out appropriate documentation, and returns documentation to Development Services Office
- Performs other green waste facility assignments relative to pilot studies and electrification under direction of green waste facility supervisor
- Inspects green waste carts for contamination
- Works with crew raising, lowering and repairing sewer manholes performing heavy manual labor
- Removes unwanted lines and symbols from pavement
- Assembles and delivers refuse carts
- Drives truck in response to emergency calls
- Picks up debris and other refuse or recyclables and places it in a truck or hopper
- Trims and prunes City street trees and shrubs at ground level
- Stripes various types of lines on streets and parking lots
- Works on construction projects installing equipment, irrigation systems, etc.
- Operates a dump truck, water truck, articulating loader, trommel, conveyors and other related equipment
- Informs the public of any change in types of materials that will be accepted or collected and schedule changes Streets Division: Sewer Maintenance:
- Operates mechanisms for loading, compressing, screening, sorting, conveying, and dumping garbage, refuse, and recyclables
- Ensures all equipment is in good working condition prior to completing assigned work tickets General Services Division:
- Performs hand cleaning, maintenance work and heavy manual labor Wastewater Division:
- Loads and unloads trucks alone
- Removes tree trimmings and cuttings, tumbleweeds from City areas and City easements Solid Waste Division:
- Paints legends and symbols on pavement
- Operates rear -loading trucks, trailers, and other related equipment
- Mixes concrete and executes necessary masonry work
- Designs and makes custom signs and graphics in the shop
- Assembles and installs street markers, stop signs and all other traffic control signs
- Operates trucks, tractors, turf mowers and other related equipment
- Locates problems and operates sewer cleaning equipment to clear stoppages
- Drives refuse truck along a collection route as required
- Operates a variety of equipment such as skip loaders and other related equipment
- Cuts downed limbs and trees for removal
- Weighs loaded and empty vehicles at weight station
- Cleans areas of the treatment plants as directed
- Operates dump trucks and forklifts
- Performs audits of septage and grease haulers; reviews hauler manifests
- Performs greasing, oil changes, and lubrication of wastewater equipment
- Ability to inspect wastewater equipment
- Assists plant mechanics and operators as directed
- Reports all vandalism, trespassing and potential right-of-way encroachments
- Regulates water flow as directed
- Performs weed control and routine debris removal on City owned and operated facilities
- Records measurements
- Operates related equipment
- Performs minor repairs and maintenance on structures
Knowledge of:
- Understand and follow both oral and written instructions
- One (1) year of experience in the operation of light and medium duty vehicles such as: dump trucks, water trucks, commercial delivery vehicles, small tractors, small loaders, light construction equipment, mowing equipment, etc. Licenses, Certificates or Special Requirements:
- Common tools, equipment and materials used in maintenance work
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work in confined areas and from heights and with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions.
- Carry out routine work assignments without close supervision
- Interact effectively with the public and other City staff
- Perform required manual tasks Training and Experience:
- Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work Ability to:
- Safely operate City equipment
- Possession of a valid California Class “C” driver’s license. A Class “B” California driver’s license must be obtained within the six-month probationary period. A valid Class “B” California driver’s license or Class “B” permit (in which case a Class “B” California driver’s license must be obtained within the six-month probationary period) is required for the Solid Waste Division. Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions:
- Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment
- Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and remove objects weighing up to 50-80 pounds, depending on job assignment.

Service Maintenance Worker is an entry-level class. Under direct supervision, incumbents learn and perform a wide variety of duties in the maintenance and operation of City facilities and equipment. Service Maintenance Worker is differentiated from higher-level maintenance classifications in that Service Maintenance Workers have minimal experience and skills and are trained on-the-job whereas the latter classes are journey-level and more specialized to the assignment.

1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.
VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)
HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
