Job Description
Definition


  • THIS RECRUITMENT WILL CLOSE THE SOONER OF 8/25/23 OR WHEN 60 APPLICATIONS ARE RECEIVED**


To perform semi-skilled and unskilled work as assigned, either individually or as a team member with other staff. The position operates all hand tools and light engine equipment such as blowers, line trimmers, turf edgers and hedge shears. Additionally, this position will operate both walk-behind mowers and/or riding mowers.


DISTINGUISHING CHARATERISTICS


This is the entry-level class laborer in the Public Works Department. Incumbents may have only limited work experience. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I/II in that the latter is responsible for semi-skilled and skilled tasks, and the operation of construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, sweepers, lift trucks and skip loaders for a variety of construction and maintenance operations.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED


Incumbents work under immediate supervision. Receives general supervision from a Maintenance Worker II or higher-level position in the Public Works Department.


Does not exercise supervision over others.


Examples of Duties


EXAMPLE OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Assist in minor routine maintenance and repair of sprinklers heads and irrigation equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers and the general public.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers.
  • Assist in maintaining designated landscape effects through mowing, edging, pruning, weeding, watering, fertilizing, cultivating, renovating lawns, planting shrubs, ground cover, trees, and flowerbeds.
  • Utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with workflow processes.
  • Assist in maintaining grounds and plantings in City parks, recreation facilities, municipal building grounds, street medians, islands and other areas as assigned.
  • Drive vehicles to transport materials, tools, and equipment as required. Operates truck and trailers as assigned.
  • Picks up, cleans and removes debris and trash from walkways, picnic areas, recreation areas, parking lots, drainage ditch, medians and culverts.
  • Operates various walk-behind mowers and/or laser type riding mowers, edgers, line trimmers, backpack blowers.


Typical Qualifications


Knowledge of:


  • Basic construction and repair methods.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Basic methods, tools, and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.


Ability To


  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities.
  • Use computers and handheld electronic devices in the course of work.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers and provide general assistance to the public.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.
  • Learn to operate the full range of light equipment utilized in maintenance work, as assigned.


Education And Experience


  • No experience is required.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.


LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE


  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is required.

Special Requirements


Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment


Work is mainly performed outdoors; ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, squat, crawl, bend, and stoop at any given time; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds of weight throughout the day and occasionally up to 90 pounds; exposure to outdoor elements in all weather conditions throughout the year; hazardous waste, sewage, chemicals, herbicides, and pesticides; ability to walk on uneven surfaces; ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Milpitas.


Other Requirements


  • Visual Requirements: Discern colors.
  • Auditory Requirements: 100-decibel hearing.
  • Physical exam and drug and alcohol screening.

RETIREMENT


Membership in CalPERS (2% at 60 or 2% at 62 with three year average salary). City of Milpitas employees do not participate in Social Security, but do contribute to Medicare.Additionally, members pay $2.40/per hour to the LIUNA pension fund.


MEDICAL INSURANCE


Choice of CalPERS Medical Plans. City pays coverage up to the Kaiser rate (currently $2,228.36/mo. for family). Employees who waive health coverage are eligible to receive $125 per month in lieu of medical plan coverage with proof of other coverage.


RETIREE MEDICAL


Employees are eligible upon CalPERS retirement from the City to receive up to 100% retiree medical coverage (currently based on the Kaiser health rate), based on years of service.


DENTAL & VISION


City provides full family coverage for Delta Dental and MES Vision at no cost to the employee.


LIFE INSURANCE


City provides $50,000 term policy. Supplemental employee-paid life insurance is available up to $500,000, based on carrier acceptance.


DISABILITY INSURANCE


City provides a Short-Term Disability plan similar to State Disability Insurance (SDI) coverage. Employees do not participate in SDI. Long-Term Disability coverage of 60% of base salary up to $1,500 per month is available after a 60-day waiting period. Additional buy-up options for LTD are available up to $6,000 per month.


VACATION


Hourly employees earn 11-31 days of vacation per year based on years of service.


HOLIDAYS


Employees receive 12 paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday per year.


SICK LEAVE


Employees earn 12 days annually.


TUITION REIMBURSEMENT


Employees are eligible to receive up to $1,400 per fiscal year in tuition reimbursement.
