Under immediate supervision, to perform construction and maintenance work on City streets, roads, sidewalks, and perform related duties as required.
In addition to the above, the following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of the essential duties of the position. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties:
- Performs hand cleaning, maintenance work and heavy manual labor
- Breaks and removes concrete
- Performs concrete repair work
- Operates patch trucks and other related equipment
- Operates a variety of equipment such as skip loader, jack hammer, concrete saw, compactors and other related power equipment
- Removes failed asphalt
- Loads and unloads trucks alone or with assistance of an assigned helper
- Spreads and levels base rock
- Repairs and replaces asphalt and concrete
- Drives and operates a vibrating roller, skip loader, dump truck or other related equipment in transporting dirt, sand, debris, construction materials, road sweepings and other materials
- Common hand tools, power tools, equipment and materials used in maintenance and construction work
- Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment
- Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work
Ability to:
- Recognize potentially hazardous conditions on the job site or with equipment
- Carry out routine work assignments without close supervision
- Perform basic arithmetic
- Safely operate City equipment and tools
- Understand and follow both oral and written instructions
- Perform required manual tasks
- Perform a variety of maintenance work
- Develop and maintain cooperative work relationships with individuals and those in the public
- Interact effectively with the public and other City staff
- Perform heavy physical labor
Training and Experience:
- One (1) year of experience in the operation of light and medium duty vehicles such as: dump trucks, water trucks, commercial delivery vehicles, small tractors, small loaders, light construction equipment, , etc.
Licenses, Certificates or Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license. A Class "B" California driver's license must be obtained within the six month probationary period.
Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions:
- Must be able to work nights, multiple shifts and overtime
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work in confined areas and from heights and with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions.
Streets Maintenance Worker is an entry-level class. Under direct supervision, incumbents learn and perform a wide variety of duties in the maintenance and operation of City equipment. Streets Maintenance Worker is differentiated from the Streets Equipment Operator classification in that Streets Maintenance Workers have minimal experience and skills and are trained on-the-job whereas the latter classes are journey-level and more specialized to the assignment.

1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.
VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)
HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).
RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement website for additional information.
