Job Description
The Position
The Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of City streets, parks, trees, street lights, traffic signals, traffic signs, pavement markings, buildings and mobile equipment. The Department is also responsible for the San Leandro Shoreline Recreation Area, the maintenance of the San Leandro Marina, the Bay Trail and the shoreline marshlands.
The Eligible List established from this recruitment will be used to fill current Maintenance Worker Entry vacancies and any future vacancies that may occur within the City, while the list remains active. Employment Lists shall remain in effect for one year, unless terminated or exhausted.
Definition: Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in connection with cleaning, maintenance, and repair of streets, parks, equipment, public buildings and related City facilities and related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is an entry level general maintenance classification in the Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents typically learn on the job, using a variety of tools.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Exercises no supervision. Receives general supervision from a section supervisor; receives lead direction from higher level staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: The essential functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.
  • Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to his/her supervisor;

  • Cleans restrooms and other City facilities and replaces supplies and equipment as needed;
  • Works independently or as a part of a crew involved with construction, maintenance and repair of City facilities involving paving, plumbing, carpentry, landscaping, painting, electrical and/or mechanical equipment;
  • Removes trash/debris from parks, streets or other City facilities; and
  • Performs minor maintenance and operates motorized equipment, power and hand tools; and performs more complex duties for training purposes;
Qualifications
To be considered, an applicant must have the required experience, training, education, knowledge and abilities as stated below.
Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED).
Experience: Six months of general maintenance experience.
Licenses/certifications/other requirements: Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to attend meetings, seminars and conferences; and perform field work. Classification requires the possession and continued maintenance of a valid class "C" California driver's license for operating a motor vehicle.
