Role Overview
We are looking for:
Solvay’s Renewable Materials and Biotechnology platform is dedicated to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for a range of markets, using renewable feed stocks and biotechnology. The Cambridge Research and Innovation laboratory aims to meet growing demand for sustainable solutions by increasing the share of renewable carbon in Solvay’s product offering and developing new business opportunities enabled by biotechnology. This growth platform complements Solvay’s activities in three other key areas: battery materials, green hydrogen and thermoplastic composites.
The new platform will bring together several Solvay businesses to integrate deep competencies in bioinformatics / data science, strain engineering, bio catalysis and fermentation processes, strengthening and accelerating the ability to scout, develop and turn into businesses the most valuable biotech-enabled opportunities.
Solvay is looking for creative and motivated scientists to strengthen our biotechnology platform. Realizing Solvay’s vision depends on collaboration between researchers from myriad personal and professional backgrounds; working as part of this diverse and multidisciplinary team is the central responsibility and benefit of this position.
We count on you for:
  • Develop and optimize high throughput assays to test for targeted improvement.
  • Function as part of a team of Scientists and Research Associates in a matrixes environment to deliver on multi-step wet lab work streams.
  • Analyze large datasets to identify structure-function relationships for iterative improvements.
  • Clear communication within projects and towards stakeholders to engage and align on the objective and deliverables
  • Performance objectives: (what success looks like, highlight challenges and expected outcomes)
  • Internal Recognition as an expert in biotechnology within Solvay
  • Projects executed in due time, budget and with optimal quality
  • Act as an expert in synthetic biology and other biotech topics, supporting transversal discussions with and within our businesses and running assessments in the field.
  • To assess scientific and technological opportunities in biotechnology suitable to transform into businesses by Solvay, actively scouting for opportunities.
  • Design libraries of strain and protein variants using computational and rational approaches to improve titer of target molecules.

  • Master or PhD in Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Biotechnology or related disciplines

  • Strong scientific background in synthetic biology, microorganism development / use and biotechnology processes
  • Collaborative and open-minded
  • Strong team player with entrepreneurial, result­ oriented approach
  • Skilled and experienced in open innovation set-ups
  • Previous industrial experience within biotechnology focused on research and development
  • Passion for sustainability, curiosity, interest in developing an holistic view of the topics investigated
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and interpersonal skill
You will get:
  • 16, or more, weeks of maternity/paternity and co-parenting leave, according to local regulations.
  • The U.S. base salary range reasonably expected to be paid for this position is $129.744 to $162,180 per year. Since actual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted base salary range. Total compensation for this role also includes bonus and/or other incentives.

Additional information:
  • Travel is required in an on-demand basis (< 20% of time)
