Microsoft’s Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO+I) team builds and operates Microsoft datacenters, which in turn power Microsoft’s cloud business. We anticipate and provide capacity for continuous scale, enabling ~30% of Microsoft revenue through Commercial Cloud). The CO+I Engineering team (CO+IE) delivers services, applications, and automation supporting datacenter planning, construction, and operation. We own a large portfolio of services, including workflows that enable predicable, lowest cost datacenter construction, telemetry systems that drive high availability and optimized energy usage, and task and performance management applications that help our operation run as efficiently as possible. CO+I Engineering is a competitive advantage for Microsoft, and an important pillar in its cloud success.

Within CO+I, the Cloud Operation, Innovation and Engineering (CO+IE) organization owns software solutions to enable cost effective execution of data center planning, operations and execution in every data center Microsoft’s cloud services, Azure, run in.

Responsibilities

The Senior Director, Modularization Engineering Manager - Global will play a key leadership role in further developing Microsoft’s datacenter modularization program. The successful candidate will bring with them years of industry experience in developing owner-driven concepts to be designed, manufactured, commissioned and delivered to datacenter projects globally. In addition to organizational leadership and people management duties, the candidate may be assigned to deliver project specific solutions as well as fleetwide innovations with the goal of delivering cloud capacity given improved schedules, quality, lower cost and predictability.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the conceptual development and delivery of modular solutions using innovative technology and advanced concept deployments. This role will require program management skills, engineering direction, decision-making and overall leadership through all disciplines and phases within the associated charters. To be successful in this role the candidate will oversee the delivery of multiple, concurrent modular solutions aligned with the scopes, schedules, and budgets of the program objectives. The successful candidate will engage with key stakeholders within Microsoft as well as outside vendors who specialize in datacenter modularization.


Program Leadership

  • Provide strategic knowledge to help teams deeply understand the return on investment wherever it may exist for datacenter modularization.
  • Oversee multi-discipline teams to engage in active risk management (proactive and reactive) to identify risks and propose mitigations for datacenter modularization.
  • Drive cross-divisional teams to define success criteria and performance metrics (e.g., Objectives and Key Results [OKRs], Key Performance Indicators [KPIs] such as quality and performance) of the feature(s)/feature areas (e.g., product, service) and works within the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) organization to ensure all objectives are supported.
  • Develop a strategic agenda across multiple cross-divisional teams to identify opportunities in datacenter modularization including comparison of various quality and performance metrics to the proposed solutions.
  • Be a subject matter expert when defining modularization program goals and prioritization for development and fleetwide implementation.
  • Act (and drive teams to act) as engineering advisors to educate and evangelize datacenter modularization opportunities. Delivers (and drive teams to deliver) implementation and field support at scale.
  • Ensure that cross-divisional teams translate the needs of the organization and other teams into program goals and prioritize deliverables based on industry and historical insights.

Modularization Deliverables

  • Develop program strategic execution plans inclusive of cost, procurement, delivery strategy and schedule integration for review and approval.
  • Possess a high level of proficiency in commercial and industrial modularization solutions with a primary focus on datacenter or equivalent high-tech designs.
  • Beginning with the end in mind, ensure modularization concepts are integrated and aligned with project specific detailed engineering and design packages for construction.
  • Drive conceptual engineering and manufacturing development in support of modular delivery. This includes Long Lead Equipment (LLE) procurement planning, cost team estimate development and funding plans, manufacturing quality control processes, offsite commissioning, safety in design improvements and end to end integration planning.
  • Participate in Module Fabrication Yard due diligence visits to evaluate capabilities and subsequent request for proposal development, bidding and awards.
  • Deliver modular solutions for datacenter buildings, power systems, cooling schemes, telecom, and controls infrastructure to align with Microsoft Corporation datacenter engineering standards.
  • Develop feasibility studies by partnering with Microsoft management peers specific to the concept, business objectives, opportunities, risks, mitigations, key result metrics and timing.
  • Coordinate a team of engineers, fabricators, constructors and project control teams to deliver datacenter modular solutions aligned with the defined scope, schedule, and budget of the program objectives.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • 6+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
  • 3+ years’ experience managing cross-functional large scale modularization projects for mission critical or high-tech industry.
  • Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development

  • 5+ years large scale project experience (100MM per project) delivering Design Build, and Design Bid Build type projects.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications
  • Chartered / Professional Engineer / Project Manager or Registered Architect
  • Experience in negotiating contracts negotiation with solid understanding of value-added ideas without compromising safety and quality of deliverables.
  • Bachelor's Degree AND 12+ years experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Able to lead teams of consultants and engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments.
  • 6+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
  • Proficient in commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter designs.
  • Able to work with other engineering and non-engineering groups in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment
  • OR equivalent experience.

Technical Program Management IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.
