Position Summary


The GPS Bus Dev, Integration, & Alliance Lead will be responsible for leadership of specific GPS M&A (merger & acquisition, divestiture), integration, and alliance management activities beyond GT5 (Go To Full Development). This leader will work across functions and externally with alliance leadership to orchestrate & drive GPS BD, M&A, integration, and alliance activities. Additionally, the leader will work with GPS Pharma, Biologics, and Cell Therapy Operating Units and in close collaboration with PD to coordinate deal diligence activities and identify risks for in-licensed deals as appropriate. In support of the BD Excellence and other mission critical initiatives, this position may also participate in or lead Business Process Excellence and Capabilities Development (“Center of Excellence”) activities and may support or lead divisional or enterprise initiatives on behalf of S&BE or GPS. This position will report to the Head of GPS Business Development.


Key Responsibilities


Individual Accountabilities


  • Lead various confidential M&A, integration, divesture, and GPS-specific alliance activities to assess, execute, or manage business development for value, ensuring representation across appropriate GPS functions, and business outcomes are aligned with GPS strategy.
  • Track and manage BMS alliances which have substantial supply, analytical, quality or CMC components. Interface with global corporate alliance management in support of joint committees.
  • Lead or support divisional or enterprise initiatives on behalf of S&BE or GPS.
  • Interface with corporate business development/alliance management and the Enterprise Integration Office and lead matrix teams of functional leaders to assess, execute, or manage acquisitions, options, or alliances to access IP technology or IP/Service as an enabler for a function. Partner with Executive Lead (typically VP-level) on Integration and executive sponsor on divestiture execution
  • Present progress and escalation to appropriate leadership (including functional and BD-related governance)
  • Follows industry and BD trends and collaborates with BI&A, Strategy & Business Intelligence, and GPS Legal to support understanding of GPS risks related to M&A and supply network.
  • Lead transaction activities and matrixed functional SME teams for deals beyond GT5 (e.g. CMC and launch) in close collaboration with OpU
  • Support development of performance management and governance (e.g., productivity KPIs, org KPIs, lessons learned, etc.) and capabilities related to BD activities
  • Lead or support contract negotiations impacting GPS (i.e. quality, financial, supply, technology, etc.)
  • Support development and maintenance of the core GPS divisional BD processes / capabilities to ensure rotation of GPS functional team members engaged in BD activities are appropriately onboarded and trained


Qualifications & Experience


  • Demonstrated strong leadership capability with ability to make and act on decisions while balancing speed, quality and risk.
  • Competency in developing strategic plans, as well as directing tactical execution; strong project management skills
  • Strategic agility - Strong and demonstrated strategic thinking capability with proven success & discipline to focus on execution of strategic decisions while balance conflicting priorities.
  • Demonstrated strong ability to influence areas not under direct control to achieve objectives and effectively communicate challenging goals & objectives.
  • Exceptional executive written & oral communications critical with proven savvy in executive escalation of critical issues
  • Exceptional capability to build alignment with senior level business partners in areas including research & development, commercial operations, manufacturing site leaders/GMs, Global Supply Chain
  • History of success operating as a key strategic partner to internal (e.g. commercial, R&D, etc.) and external stakeholders (alliance partners, CMOs, etc.)
  • Successful track record of building, leading and maintaining high-performing and highly motivated teams; regarded and well-respected as a strong leader of multi-disciplinary, cross-functional teams
  • Understanding of legal contracts and previous support/leadership of negotiations and contract execution
  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences, Engineering, or Business. Master’s degree is highly valued and preferred
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment and build strong relationships by being transparent, reliable and delivering on commitments.
  • Process and project management excellence (PMP preferred) and drive for results. Ability to provide innovative ideas to optimize value chain and generate new ideas or alternatives that create value including seeking new information and external insights.
  • At least 15 years’ experience in Operations, Business Development, Procurement, or related functions, with strong business & financial acumen
  • A history of developing and achieving key metrics and scorecards
  • Experienced in matrix management, challenging self and others to continuously learn and improve.
  • Ability to travel on an as-needed basis
