Arlington County’s Department of Human Service (DHS) is seeking a Safety and Security Coordinator who will be part of the Facilities Operations Bureau (FOB), which provides support to the daily upkeep, maintenance and safety and security requirements associated with buildings and facilities for the DHS that house and support a wide array of human services programs and actives (e.g., office buildings, homeless shelters, group homes, day program, medical and dental clinics, laboratories, and a small fleet of vehicles).
The Security Coordinator will report to the Facilities Operations Director, and be responsible for managing the safety and security for DHS facilities: develop security-related polices, provide direction and guidance to DHS staff, manage security contracts, and serve as the subject matter expert on all issues related to safety and security.
Specific duties include:
- Providing policy direction and guidance to DHS management and staff;
- Managing the contract for the security vendors, ensuring that the contract is upheld, and billing is correct;
- Participating in the DHS Evacuation Team, ensuring that practice drills occur.
- Providing oversight to all DHS contracted security guards, including Special Conservators of the Peace (SCOPs) as part of the DHS Crisis Intervention Center (CIC);
- Developing and administering security-related policies and programs;
- Identifying, developing, and implementing safety/security training for DHS staff;
- Working with DHS staff as well Arlington County Police Department, Sheriff’s Department, hospital staff and others to ensure SCOPs conduct their duties to meet the needs of the law enforcement while protecting clients’ lives and well-being;
- Leading DHS Safety Committee and serving on the County-wide safety committees; and
The successful candidate will be reliable, personable and a team player with strong oral and written communications skills and security/law enforcement background. The flexibility and the ability to stay calm in stressful situations and make judgement calls in high-risk scenarios is vital.

Minimum:
- A Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice or safety management or a related human services field;
- Project management;

Substitution: Education may be substituted by additional directly related experience on a year-for-year basis.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
- Law Enforcement experience.
- Working with vulnerable populations, such as people with developmental disabilities, metal health challenges or substance use disorder;
- Developing policies, training staff, or managing contracts; and/or
- Experience with Conservators of Peace;
- Experience overseeing a security program;
Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Must complete pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check.
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
