Job Description
Join the hundreds of talented and innovative team members who are making an impact every day at California Times, incorporating Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune, two of the most iconic media brands in the nation. Whether you love to tell compelling stories or want to drive our award-winning powerhouse in new directions, the Los Angeles Times team is the place to be.
Summary
The Los Angeles Times is seeking reporters to join our growing team of journalists working on Latino Initiatives with a focus on building relationships with the Latino community.

Building on the success of the Latinx Files newsletter, digital Día de Muertos altar and packages on the Chicano Moratorium, Fernandomania @ 40 and LA Vanguardia, this team will bring to life the vibrancy of the U.S. Latino experience with a focus on culture and identity. This project will be multi-platformed in approach with rich visual and audio storytelling, provocative commentary, short documentaries and live events.
We are looking for innovators and collaborators to be instrumental in shaping a cohesive product vision and editorial voice while engaging authentically with the Latino communities in Los Angeles and beyond. These roles require nimble reporters who can toggle between writing on trending topics that are popping on Latino social media and producing thoughtful enterprise reporting on issues that resonate with our community.
The successful candidates will have experience working in Latino or Spanish-language news media or have prior experience writing on topics that focus on the Latino community. They should also have a willingness to adapt to what audiences are engaging with, while being able to identify the topics that will spark engagement within our community. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
We want a team that understands the differences within the Latino community and will champion journalism that is for, not just about, the community.
Requirements
  • An understanding of audience data and experience using metrics to inform strategy and editorial decisions
  • Ability to navigate digital platforms and stay on top of current issues and trends, including use of TikTok and Instagram
  • An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes collaboration
  • Experience writing on Latino topics or working with Latino or Spanish-language media outlets
  • Proven ability to work well in a team setting and juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • A sense of excitement around developing ideas and experimenting with different ways to tell a story
  • Ability to foster excellent communication with peers, supervisors and the newsroom
  • A minimum of one year of journalism experience
These positions are classified as Reporter in the Los Angeles Times Guild and will be based in El Segundo, Calif. Reporters must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle in good working condition, with suitable auto insurance coverage. Occasional night and weekend work is possible.
The L.A. Times is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes expressions of interest from people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
The pay scale for these positions is $60,000 to $110,000. This is the pay scale range the Company reasonably expects to pay for these positions at the time of this posting. Compensation will be determined based on skills, qualifications and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position. Please visit our career site to view the benefits available to our employees as well as our company history, achievement, values, mission and more.
The Company is a mandatory vaccination employer for COVID-19 and its variants. The Company requires that its employees be fully vaccinated as of their start date. If you require medical or religious accommodation we will engage in the interactive process with you. Proof of vaccination will be required prior to start. If we make you an offer and you are not yet vaccinated, we will accommodate a delay in start date.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume, cover letter and samples of editing work or applicable clips to General Manager Angel Rodriguez and Editorial Director Fidel Martinez. Please note, the opportunity to attach additional documents appears on the third screen and is labeled "Upload."

Thank you for your interest in joining our team at the Los Angeles Times! We look forward to reviewing your application.
