Job Description

The Manager, Regional Operations is responsible for all management aspects across multiple mobile units/mini shops in a specific geographic area which encompasses Quality, Safety, Production, Maintenance, Training, Sales and Special Projects. The main responsibility of these field units is the performance of various repairs on tank cars assigned to area owners/lessors in an expeditious manner that will eliminate loss of revenues due to downtime associated with shopping of cars. The position is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with customers and promoting the use and development of mobile units/mini shops to generate revenues for the Company.

This position oversees the management of field units in a specific geographic area. Typically, the incumbent will manage 10+ mobile units/mini shops that tend to be located on the premises of companies that are larger lessors of Union Tank Car Company tank cars. Each unit has a supervisor who heads up day-to-day operations with the incumbent overseeing the whole area operation.

The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of managing the mobile units/mini shops assigned to him/her, including initial start-up activities. The incumbent investigates potential sites, works with company representatives to start up site, arranges for equipment, materials and workforce required to open an operation of this type, and trains a supervisor in the performance of day-to-day functions that will ensure an efficient operation. He/she then monitors the operations to ensure standards are being adhered to and objectives are being met.

In order to solicit business and effectively sell UTC services, the incumbent must possess a strong working knowledge of UTC’s equipment and repair capabilities and their application by industry and market. The incumbent must have a good knowledge of our repair process and technical advantages and be able to compare our strengths and weaknesses with those of his/her competition. He/she must be capable of providing in-depth explanations of UTC’s policies, including pricing and repair capabilities, and be able to handle sensitive sales situations with minimum impact on businesses. The incumbent will make joint sales calls on customers with the appropriate Sales Representative or Regional Sales Manager in order to promote the Company’s repair capabilities and services.

Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Participates in and actively supports quality projects, activities and responsible care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.
  • Assists location supervisor(s) with production and material scheduling to maximize shop efficiencies and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Recruits new supervisors and trains employees in accordance with the company’s safety, industrial hygiene and environmental policies and programs, and enforces compliance with published work rules. Responsible for initial training of all employees and ensuring on-going skill training programs exist to inform and educate all staff.
  • Identifies potential maintenance problems and eliminate by preventative maintenance. Assure adequate repair parts inventory to minimize maintenance related downtime. Provide instruction to front line supervisors in proper operational methods required to minimize downtime to equipment failure.
  • Selects, develops, demonstrates leadership and empowers subordinates to establish a productive work environment that encourages a team approach for continuous improvement to achieve the company’s vision.
  • Oversees the overall management of mobile units/mini shops assigned to him/her to ensure efficient operations and customer satisfaction at all times.
  • Promotes and sells new mobile units and mini shops to our present and prospective customers. Solicits and negotiates new location sites to promote company expansion that will generate increased company revenues.

SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Possess considerable stamina to perform the essential functions over a large geographical plant area.
  • Climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet high, bend, stoop, stretch, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. to set up tables and to attach to tank cars.
  • Be willing and able to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, earplugs and respirators.
  • Have keen visual and audio acuity to recognize various shop danger warning signals to avoid injuries and promote a safe working environment.
  • Be able to travel outside of the normal place of work via automobile, train and commercial airline.
  • Ability and availability to work considerable overtime hours that may often be required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic selling skills and related customer relations.
  • Enter tank cars via a manway opening approximately 20 inches in diameter.
  • Ability to operate a computer to access and maintain pricing information through the appropriate software.
  • Be able to tolerate both heights and confined spaces.
  • Communicate, through written and verbal means, and give instructions/information in a clear and understandable manner to subordinates/customers.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of related work experience in a lean manufacturing/repair environment with supervisory leadership skills.
  • Experience leading or supporting multiple sites is beneficial.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
