This position is a 9-month position, mid August through mid May. The Public Safety Officer’s primary purpose is to protect life and property. This is accomplished through a variety of tasks including: preventive patrol, reporting suspicious persons/activities, reporting unsafe conditions, providing transportation to students and the enforcement of University’s rules and regulations. Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic and provide a security presence for dignitary visits, special events, and sporting events. They complete written reports on all security related matters and provide information and assistance to students, staff and the general public. Finally, they assist South Orange Police, Fire and Rescue Squad when necessary or as required. This officer will be positioned at the University Center Satellite Center.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Preventive Patrol:
Conduct patrols of University Center
Lock/Unlock building according to daily operation schedule
Complete incident reports relating to University Center incidents
Generate property reports
Complete work orders that identify safety concerns in need of attention from Facilities Engineering
2. First Responders to all emergency calls occurring in University Center
Medical Emergencies
Fire Alarms
Bomb Threats
Intrusion alarms
Maintenance
3. Provide security services at all visits of dignitaries, special event at University Center
Direct and control pedestrian traffic
Perform package inspections
Maintain crowd control
4. May be assigned to other duties and locations as required.
Required Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED
Must be able to work well under pressure
Must be able to analyze and evaluate situations and determine appropriate action or response
Must be able to clearly communicate directions, instructions, SHU policy and regulations to community members
Basic computer skills with knowledge of alarm systems
Desired Qualifications:
Community policing course, CPR, AED, First Aid, Narcan certification
Ability to write a clear and concise report
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid NJ driver's license to operate department vehicles including 14 passenger vehicles
