Job Description

Duties

Public Health AmeriCorps is a 400 million dollar investment from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to enable the recruitment, training, and development of a new generation of public health leaders who are ready to respond to the public health needs of the nation by providing public health service in communities.

AmeriCorps members serve primarily in state, local, Tribal, and territorial public health departments or in service to public health departments. Public Health AmeriCorps goals include:

  • Help meet public health needs of local communities by providing needed capacity and support in state and local public health settings and advancing more equitable health outcomes for communities who are currently or historically underserved.
  • Provide pathways to good quality public health-related careers by providing exposure through onsite experience, training, and more, with a focus on recruiting AmeriCorps members who reflect the communities in which they will serve.
The incumbent will:
  • Coordinate member-focused events, meeting agendas and follow-up, including capturing notes and action items.
  • Research, draft, and edits proposals, reports, and other communication.
  • Gather information, conduct interviews, identify, and analyze issues, and developing recommendations for functional problems.
  • Coordinate partnerships and engage in discussions with key stakeholders and leadership to further programmatic goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure successful implementation of program updates, changes, announcements, etc.
  • Design and implement special projects.
  • Inform key stakeholders of program barriers, issues, challenges, and successes that affect progress.
  • Support execution of communication and outreach strategy.
  • Book travel on behalf of leadership team.
  • Oversee administrative functions including weekly meeting agendas, electronic document filing system, team calendar, and other logistical and administrative duties.

Qualifications

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to at least the upper range of the NY-01 pay band, which would be at or equivalent to, the GS-05 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is that which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includesbut are not limited to, 1) knowledge of, and ability to apply, the principles, methods, or tools for developing, scheduling, and coordinating projects and resources, including monitoring, and inspecting deliverables and moving deadlines. 2) Strong writing and editing skills and attention to detail. 3) Ability to translate technical information into plain language, as well as formatting, and catching grammar errors quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps VISTA) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Such experience must be clearly documented in the applicant's resume.

Education

This job does not have an education qualification requirement; however education may be substituted for Specialized Experience at this grade level.
Education: 1 full year of post-secondary education or superior academic achievement.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Additional information

This Public Health AmeriCorps (PHA) term appointment will not exceed September 30, 2025.
Remote Status: This position is eligible for full-time remote work based on the duties of the position. If selected, employees must sign a remote work agreement prior to onboarding that details remote working conditions and expectations for the position. As agency remote work policies are finalized and/or evolve, there may be additional guidance and requirements for the position. After hire, employees must follow the requirements in the agency's change of duty station policy when changing duty stations. Some remote positions may require the employee's worksite to be within a specified geographic area to fulfill positions needs.
