Job Duties

The registered nurse provides professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings. Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. May supervise support staff. This position primarily functions as a public health nurse who provides patient services, assessments, pre-counseling, education, exams, immunizations and treatments in a high-volume public health outpatient clinic. Services offered in this clinic include public health mandated programs: family planning, immunizations, and sexual health. In addition, this position supports nursing functions and activities in community outreach and community based clinical activities. This position is also responsible for emergency response as part of the Emergency Planning and Response team for the Chesapeake Health Department. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Registered Nurse by State code.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires RN licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state. If a new graduate, must
obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or subject to termination per the
regulations governing the practice of nursing.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and
suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
  • Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and
counseling technique
  • Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve
problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the
public
  • Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing,
principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical
terminology, case management
  • May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Additional study in the area
of health promotion/or public health is preferred
  • BSN preferred
  • Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and
health promotion
  • Experience working in a public health or women's health setting with skills on physical examination, health assessment, interviewing and counseling.
  • Bi-lingual with proficiency in Spanish
