The Role
The Process Development Engineer is responsible for designing, coordinating, and executing experimental laboratory, scaleup, and demonstration studies to develop new or improved processes for multiple Shell businesses.
Where you fit in –
This position is in the Process Development department within the Chemicals, Downstream Process and Biotechnology VPship in PT Technology. Process Development is a global team with ~80 staff with expertise in developing new technology and processes across a Technology Development Funnel. We develop and de-risk innovative yet pragmatic process technology solutions to support the growth ambition of the Chemicals, Low Carbon Fuels and New Energies businesses. A strong linkage to Catalysis is also seen as a key enabler to be successful in the delivery of process development. The successful candidate will play a key role in development programs for global Chemicals, Low Carbon Fuels and Long-Range Research/New Energies, supporting a wide spectrum of customers over time as programs evolve.
What’s the role -
Depending on the scope of projects, accountabilities can include:
- Identify and propose new R&D programs for funding.
- Understand and assure safety and environmental compliance in their respective laboratories/work areas and the broader Process Development department.
- Design and model conceptual processes and scale up.
- Recommend patent action arising from research programs.
- Formulate experimental programs/test runs (laboratory - bench - pilot scale) with attention to safety.
- Define and execute risk mitigation plans for internal and external technology developments at all stages of development.
- Plan operational campaigns, including logistics, resourcing, operational conditions, analysis schemes and modifications to units.
- Provide direction and support to laboratory experimentalists and/or team of scientists and experimentalists to execute experimental programs.
- Coach and mentor less experienced staff.
- Perform data analysis, document results of experimental studies and make recommendations for future action.
- Understand business needs in technology development and assure alignment with research and development programs.
- Provide engineering support for a variety of technology development programs associated with Chemicals, Biofuels, and New Energies Research and Technology (NERT).
- Share best practices in the area of process development and provide challenge/expertise to other projects.
- Lead Process Development projects.
- Interface with project sponsors and customers.
- Identify, manage and support external technology collaborations (ETCs) and serve as focal point for these activities.
What we need from you -
- A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
- Degree in Chemical Engineering, or equivalent (MS or PhD preferred) with at least five (5) years relevant operations, manufacturing, and/or R&D experience in petrochemicals, refining or other process technology.
Specific skills and experiences must include:
- Process modeling/simulation experience (e.g., Aspen, PRO/II, etc.) and the ability to use/learn new process simulation tools.
- Knowledge of analytical techniques such as gas chromatography.
- Experience with process safety processes including Management of Change, HAZOP, PHA, and PSM bowtie analysis, either in manufacturing operations and/or R&D.
- Experience with design/planning/modification/operation of experimental facilities (laboratory and/or pilot).
- Experience with experimental process studies in laboratories and/or pilot plants.
- Demonstrated leadership in applying health, safety, security and environmental standards and principles, including visible safety leadership.
Other skills and experiences can include:
- Proven networking and teamworking skills.
- Capability to mentor and direct the work of laboratory experimentalists/operators.
- Experience as an operations support engineer (OSE) or manufacturing support engineer for multiple refining and/or petrochemical units.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and accommodating without compromising key objectives and milestones.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Basic understanding of the stages of the Technology Development Funnel, all the way from ideation through proof of concept, scale up, and commercialization.
- Self-directed, delivery focus, and can-do attitude.
- Ability to communicate (verbal and written) at various levels - management, business sponsors, outside Shell, with process engineering and laboratory technicians.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities.
- Demonstrated understanding of and comfort in dealing with a diversity of cultures, work practices and customs.
- Demonstrated ability to work in global teams.
