Process Development Engineer – Wet Processes, Drying And Granulation

What To Expect
Tesla’s Materials Engineering group is looking for a highly motivated Process Development Engineer to work on a critical challenge facing the world’s energy transition – Battery Active materials. As a process development engineer in our Materials Engineering Team, you will lead the development and deployment of new-to-the world chemical production processes and equipment.
This position will be focused on water-based dispersion technology as well as drying and granulation processes. You will be working closely with industry experts and technology providers to ensure successful and timely project delivery. Responsibilities will include development of production concepts, managing production trials and designing new processing facilities to produce key intermediates in the battery materials value chain. A successful team member will lead projects starting from the concept through to design, install, integration, ramp, and handover to operations teams.
What You’ll Do

• Define and manage production trials from feasibility to full scale operations, with in depth process balances with respect to material and energy efficiency towards best-in class sustainable production
• Develop production concepts and technology platforms with respective development timelines and budget, using internal and external resources and production equipment
• Examples of these responsibilities may include:
• Develop operating procedures, safety protocols, and maintenance plans for large-scale chemical process equipment
• Work closely with the laboratory R&D teams in parallel, to de-risk full scale plant design and development
• Developing and maintaining process flow diagrams, process design criteria, stream tables, and piping & instrumentation diagrams
• Performing calculations to support the development of mass & energy balances, heat transfer models, and hydraulic circuits
• Support operations teams with achieving productivity and material quality targets on full commercial scale systems (green- or brownfield)
• Develop schematics and detailed designs for world-scale, chemical processing facilities used to convert raw materials into state-of-the-art battery materials
• Interface with equipment and technology suppliers throughout all stages of the project: concept development, detailed engineering, procurement, installation, and acceptance testing
• Generate equipment specifications & datasheets, instrument datasheets, control narratives, and 3D plant layouts
• Developing of complete process packages and based on production trials and development data

What You’ll Bring

• Familiar with general plant equipment – pumps for slurry application, vapor compressors, scrubbers, candle filters, heat exchangers, conveyor, etc.
• Experience in solid inorganic material production (battery, catalyst, ceramics, food / feed … ), experience in or with respective industry standards / production environments is a plus
• Experience working with scaling of liquid processes and drying processes from pilot to production
• Experience in 3rd interactions, working closely with third party on technology providers to ensure accurate results and successful delivery of a scope
• Experience in liquid reactor equipment (stirred tanks, recirculation tanks), wet and dry milling, as well as large-scale drying equipment
• Evidence of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve challenging problems
• Evidence of exceptional ability, especially in the field of wet formulations and respective drying / granulation processes
