At CARES Northwest, the health and safety of children come first. We are passionate about ending child abuse through effective prevention, medical evaluation, treatment and support. Join us as we help children and families overcome the crisis of abuse, and move forward toward hope and healing. Established in 1987, CARES Northwest is one of nation’s oldest children’s advocacy centers and the largest in Oregon. Our program is a unique collaboration of four health systems – Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel, OHSU’s Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and Providence Children’s Health – and child abuse multidisciplinary partners in Multnomah and Washington counties. Advocating for over 42,000 children in our 34-year history, CARES Northwest is a leader in our region’s efforts to protect our increasingly diverse and complex community of children and promote their healing.
Responsibilities:
The Prevention/Health Educator provides child abuse and violence prevention education to parents and caregivers, teen parents, adolescents and peer professionals, promoting child safety and wellness, as well as healthy families. The educator maintains a current knowledge base in these and related areas and employs a variety of learning methodologies geared toward both adolescent and adult program participants. The educator also stays abreast of current issues and events that may impact child abuse prevention and response. The educator participates actively in the development, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of the program. The educator also works collaboratively with educators of other types of violence prevention and helps to bridge the gaps that impact CARES Northwest’s service area.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in primary prevention, public health, education or related field preferred. Relevant experience and/or education considered.

Bilingual/bicultural preferred.
  • Familiarity with violence prevention partners and resources in Multnomah and/or Washington counties preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development, primary prevention, and interpersonal violence.
  • SPECIAL SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Experience with curriculum development preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in teaching, public speaking, and individual and group engagement.
  • Ability to build positive relations with colleagues, youth, parents and caregivers, youth-serving organization staff, and medical and mental health providers.
  • Understands and applies adolescent and adult learning principles.
  • Creative, self-directed and resourceful; equally comfortable working independently and as part of an effective team.
  • Strong racial equity lens, and professional and/or lived experience working with marginalized communities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity and comfort level with technology and social media
