Common Threads is seeking part-time Nutrition Educators to lead classes in New York City. The ideal candidate is someone who is responsible for maintaining a high quality of implementation, scheduling, auditing, and communication with school administrators and staff, community partners, and the Common Threads team. A Common Threads Nutrition Educator is the face of the organization, teaching hands-on cooking classes and nutrition education to 1st-8th grade students, parents, and teachers. All of our student and adult programming consists of basic nutrition lessons, each with a recipe demo and tasting emphasizing fresh, healthy ingredients and adopting healthy cooking and eating habits. Hours will vary from week to week (0-12 hours but up to 20 hours per week during our busy season).


Responsibilities


  • Teach children and adults cooking skills and nutrition in-person (and sometimes virtually); give participants the tools to make healthy choices using existing lesson plans from Common Threads
  • Instructors are required to follow the approved course curriculum, complete all grocery shopping and submit required documentation and receipts
  • Instructors will be trained on the curriculum, policies, procedures, and administrative responsibilities
  • Communicate with school and partner organization staff and admin as well as with Common Threads staff
  • Administer pre-and post-surveys to students and families and manage paperwork
  • Able to travel across all 5 boroughs of NYC; travel costs are reimbursed

Qualifications


  • Possess positive, upbeat energy and a passion for wellness, food access, tolerance and awareness, and making a positive impact on society
  • Strong time management and logical thinking skills; must be task-oriented
  • Strong skills in written & verbal communication, organization, and collaboration
  • Experience teaching or working with elementary children and their caregivers is strongly preferred
  • Must hold current food service sanitation certifications or obtain within first 90 days of employment
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook, and Google Drive documents
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skillset
  • Experience or education in nutrition, dietetics, community and behavioral health, health education, public health, nursing (or related field) required
  • A commitment to the mission and values of Common Threads
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English/Other) preferred. Must be fluent in Spanish and English and comfortable teaching in both languages as needed
  • Experience working with culturally diverse audiences


Additional Information


  • Candidate must attend mandatory training or other virtual or in-person training, as required
  • Common Threads employees are subject to a background check prior to employment
  • Position reports to the Nutrition Education Manager
  • Payment is on a per-lesson basis and scheduled based on partner site availability. Hours fluctuate throughout the year and no minimum number of hours are guaranteed.
  • On the rare occasion that an instructor is required to teach virtually, the instructor should be comfortable teaching in a virtual setting and must possess adequate technology for teaching a class such as a laptop/computer/digital tablet, camera, headphones/mic, etc.
  • Common Threads requires proof of vaccination for in-person programming


Compensation & Benefits


The position is SNAP-ED grant-funded


Compensation Rates For In-person Classes Include


  • Nutrition Educators are Common Threads employees eligible for paid sick time and access to the resources within the Employee Assistance Program.
  • Cooking Skills & World Cuisine and Family Cooking Classes: $200 per class (approx. 6 hours, including prep and clean-up)
  • Parent Workshops: $75 (approx. 2 hours, including prep and clean-up)
  • Small Bites: $75 per class (each class approx. an hour)
  • $20/hour for administrative duties (i.e., training, attending meetings)
  • Program Events: $75 for the first 2 hours and then $20/additional hours
