Job Description
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Note for US based roles: Any offer of employment is contingent on providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination prior to your start date, subject to approved medical and/or religious exemptions, in accordance with applicable law.

The New York Times's Photo department is looking for an ambitious journalist who aspires to become a leader in the craft of visually driven journalism. You will be part of The Times's Editing Residency, a two-year program that offers participants the opportunity to develop and deepen editing skills. The residents participate in speaker programs and training and receive regular feedback. The photo-editing resident will spend the first three months immersed in text editing, followed by two or three rotations as a photo editor on different desks.

As a resident in the Photo department, you will conceptualize, research, assign, select and publish photography across platforms. With a creative eye, an elevated aesthetic and sound news judgment, you will help shape the visual presentation of breaking news, daily stories, features and long-form enterprise. You will work to combine words and visuals seamlessly in a variety of formats, including live news briefings, photo essays, photographer-shot and reported photo/video dispatches, and various digital presentations. Working with experienced photo editors, you will learn to generate regular and ambitious visual enterprise aligned with desks’ coverage goals, elevating the role of visuals in their reports.

You should have a strong foundation of journalism experience, excellent news judgment, a sharp eye for detail and an interest in a broad array of topics. We are looking for candidates who are curious, highly collaborative and committed to excellence. The ability to work effectively on deadline is essential. By the end of the residency, you will have a portfolio demonstrating a clear ability to conceive of, pitch, develop, edit and build powerful and innovative visual stories at the highest standard in a fast-paced newsroom. You will also have learned to elevate the language associated with these visual stories.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of professional visual journalism experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • A commitment to The Times’s mission and values.
  • A track record of developing trusting relationships, collaborating and building consensus.
  • Photography/video — field reporting, interviewing, creating and editing/packaging imagery or footage.
  • Copy editing — critical thinking, story framing/organization, tone, grammar and tightening language.
  • Strong grasp of photo-editing principles, including direction, sequencing, ethics, usage and copyright issues, and a broad knowledge of the current photographic landscape.
  • Reporting — news gathering, interviewing, researching, writing and narrative storytelling.
  • A background in any number of other disciplines. Here are a few examples:
  • Ability to communicate in writing and in person clearly, concisely and persuasively.
  • Technical skills, including proficiency in imaging software, and a facility for learning new technology and tools.
