PAYROLL TECHNICIAN
SALARY: $5,475.00 to $6,672.00 Monthly (Range 81)
$750 New Hire Incentive (One-time payment, upon completion of six-month probation)
LENGTH OF SERVICE: 12 Months per Year

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Payroll Technician performs complex statistical calculations and detailed file maintenance relating to classified and certificated payroll processing. This position is responsible for collaborating with various departments and agencies to resolve specialized and technical duties related to payroll to ensure employees are paid in an accurate and timely manner.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists with leave advancement and posting of employee leave activity;
- Calculates, audits, and reconciles payroll for classified, certificated and substitute employees;
- Researches and applies organizational policies and labor agreements;
- Develops and maintains files, spreadsheets and records;
- Resolves complex payroll issues;
- Performs complex calculations and audits related to personnel changes;
- Collaborates and coordinates with various departments and agencies to complete payroll transactions;
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Prepares and maintains system payroll calendars;
- Assists employees by researching, answering questions and addressing concerns;
- Uses proper payroll coding to ensure accurate reporting of compensation to CalPERS, CalSTRS and other retirement systems;
- Trains staff on payroll procedures;
- Develops and prepares various forms and correspondence;
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Experience processing various payroll transactions, using various accounting software applications;
Skill in the use of standard office equipment (telephone, computer, typewriter, fax, printer, calculator, etc.), processing complex payroll transactions, interpreting and applying federal and state laws relating to payroll processing;
Knowledge of financial and general office policies and procedures; methods, practices and terminology used in payroll and statistical recordkeeping;
Ability to exercise sound judgment, interpret and communicate policies and procedures, maintain accurate financial records, perform mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy, meet deadlines, work and communicate effectively with a variety of individuals and groups;
Physical Abilities include sitting for extended periods, reaching, fine manual dexterity, pulling, talking/hearing, and near and far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field of vision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Two (2) years of experience processing payroll;
- Ability to receive a passing score on the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS) Payroll Technician written test. *If test was previously taken and passed, proof of a passing score is required in lieu of taking the test;
- Possession of a high school diploma (or its equivalency) or higher or possession of a GED.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- One (1) year experience processing payroll in a California school district or County Office of Education.
