Who We Are
The City of Detroit Human Resources Department, Employee Services Division is responsible for providing human resources services that support operational needs, promotes employee engagement, and fosters an environment that contributes to the City's objectives.
Position Summary


The major functions performed by a Human Resource Specialist include the development, application and resolution of issues and concerns regarding the effective administration and compliance with required City of Detroit, State of Michigan and federal laws and regulations. This position reports to the General Manager Employee Services.

The primary purpose of this position is to contribute to the continuous improvement of the Human Resources department, help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the department, and contribute to the achievement of the City of Detroit by providing administrative support to the HR Team. The Onboarding Coordinator is one of the first points of contact in the Human Resource office and has significant interaction with new and existing employees and leaders. This position is responsible for a variety of complex functions requiring initiative, time sensitivity, and outstanding organization and computer skills. Specific tasks include independent facilitation and coordination of projects, problem solving requiring independent judgment and critical analysis, and various clerical duties.

This is the entry-level in this series. Incumbents assist higher-level professionals in the conduct of their duties and/or perform specific tasks for a program area or group of customers. Work is reviewed at frequent intervals for accuracy, adherence to goals, and technical soundness.

Examples of Duties

  • Preparing onboarding documents and kits.
  • Coordinate logistical aspects of onboarding
  • Preparing onboarding email templates
  • Provide administrative support to the Onboarding Specialist
  • Be a welcoming, enthusiastic face for new employees of our organization
  • Introducing new employees to the team members.
  • Perform data entry and generate reports for onboarding
  • Answer phone calls, coordinate meetings, and provide general information and direction to employees
  • Collecting paperwork and other related documents from the new hire.
  • Maintain files, records, reports, and other documentation pertaining to onboarding activities
  • Clearly communicate with employees regarding onboarding processes and timeframes
  • Delegating tasks to the new employees and answering their questions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
Bachelor's degree with major in human resources, business, management, organizational development, or Human Resource.

Experience
Human Resource Specialist I - One to three (1-3) years of human resources experience in any combination of the following components: compensation, recruitment/staffing, benefits, human resources, employee Resource, training and development, and organizational development.

License / Certificates
May be required to periodically participate in continuing education opportunities in related professional development categories.

Designations from the Society of Human Resources Management, International Personnel Management Association – HR
  • SHRM-CP/SCP Certification preferred.
