Job Summary
UT Southwestern is in search of of an Occupational Safety Specialist in their Safety and Business Continuity department. The Occupational Safety Specialist for the UTSW Campus consists of surveying the campus and construction sites for OSHA violations that present hazards that could cause harm to personnel, property or equipment and mitigating the hazard.
Experience and Education
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in safety related field strongly preferred and two (2) years directly related safety experience.
Master's degree in safety related field and no experience.
Professional certification pertinent to specific safety specialty is preferred and may be considered in lieu of degree with four (4) years of directly related safety experience.
Pertinent Military experience may be considered for some of the required experience.
Job Duties
Expertise is required in one of these specialized areas, Radiation Safety, Laser Safety, Fire Safety, Occupational Safety, Biosafety, Chemical Safety, or Environmental Compliance. Investigates safety and environmental incidents; identifying causes and how to prevent their recurrence.
Ensures employee health & safety standards are met in all areas of the organization.
Performs surveys of laboratories and facilities to ensure adherence to safety regulation and procedures.
Identifies potential safety hazards, prepares reports on conditions, and takes action to mitigate identified deficiencies.
Ensures proper use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste.
Provide assistance and safety training to departments.
This position is designated as essential. Personnel in designated essential positions are expected to report to work as required in the event of an emergency to sustain institutional services or protect assets.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Other Duties:
Implement and maintain a comprehensive Occupational Safety Program in accordance with UT Southwestern requirements.
This includes the development of written programs, performance of inspections, and conducting research in order to maintain a safe workplace.
Inspect all construction work sites and issue work permits for confined space entry, HotWorks, trenching and excavation, hi-work, and similar hazardous work as required.
Conduct workplace injury investigations and create a report to document the incident, gather evidence, identify root cause(s), and make necessary recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
Assists in preparing for and responding to emergencies including fires, flooding, and hazardous materials incidents. Attends required training to achieve and maintain certifications as necessary to accomplish these goals.
