Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) has an exciting opportunity for an experimentally-focused Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team. Supported by a project funded by the Clean Energy Manufacturing (CEM) program under US DOE Basic Energy Sciences, we are focused on building a comprehensive experimental understanding of factors that control selectivity and efficiency of photo- and electrochemical catalyst networks. Additionally, we aim to develop new, bio-inspired, internal signaling pathways in artificial systems.

Join our team at LBNL and contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of clean energy manufacturing. Apply now and be part of our mission to advance scientific knowledge for a sustainable future.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct analytical chemistry analysis, including gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and ICP-MS.
  • Perform structural and functional materials characterization, including SEM, XRD, XPS, XAS and XES, XRF, infrared spectroscopy, and AFM.
  • Collaborate in designing, fabricating, and analyzing multisite catalytic systems.
  • Attend and contribute to one-on-one and collective weekly meetings.
  • Carry out X-ray methods at synchrotron beamlines such as Advanced Light Source (ALS), Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), and LINAC Coherent Light Source (LCLS).
  • Conduct functional analysis using scanning probe microscopies.
  • Fabricate catalytic systems using lithographic techniques.
  • Perform spectromicroscopy analysis using micro-Raman and micro-photoluminescence.
  • Write publications for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research findings at conferences, internal meetings, and workshops.
  • Apply thin film deposition and materials processing techniques, such as ALD, sputtering and e-beam evaporation, photolithography, furnace annealing, and RTA.
  • Develop means to assess activity and coordination between different sites.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in physical chemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, materials science, materials engineering, or related experimental field or equivalent.
  • Track record of writing papers supported by publication record.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Expertise in the field of physical chemistry of biological and inorganic materials, with a focus on natural and artificial photosynthetic mechanisms.
  • Experience with nanofabrication.
  • Experience with laboratory methods relevant to electrocatalysis and/or photoelectrocatalysis.
  • Deep commitment to reproducible research and team-based efforts.
  • Strong emphasis on careful experimental measurements, data management, and safe laboratory operations as documented in LBNL’s Integrated Safety Management (ISM) plan.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in stochastic modeling techniques such as kinetic Monte Carlo.
  • Familiarity with automation of laboratory workflows.
  • Experience with enzymatic or bio-hybrid catalysis.
  • Experience with synchrotron measurements.

Notes:

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
  • This is a full-time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5000.00 - $5,996.00. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.

Based on University of California Policy - SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program and U.S Federal Government requirements, Berkeley Lab requires that all members of our community obtain the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they are eligible. As a condition of employment at Berkeley Lab, all Covered Individuals must Participate in the COVID-19 Vaccination Program by providing proof that vaccination requirements have been met or submitting a request for Exception or Deferral.
