Job Summary:
The Microbiology/Immunology Supervisor coordinates laboratory quality assurance activities. Reports to the laboratory medical director, laboratory administrative director and hospital epidemiologist. Interacts with the infection prevention department, pharmacy department, nursing and medical staff.
Essential Functions
- Assure that staff complies with department, laboratory and hospital safety, administrative, corporate compliance and human resources policies and procedures,
- Ensure that policies and procedures conform with state, federal and accrediting agencies' requirements.
- Assure that reagents and equipment perform within specified parameters via quality control procedures and instrument function checks,
- Conduct regular department staff meetings to improve communication, engage and involve staff in decision-making; provide continuing education opportunities for staff,
- Train lab staff to utilize the electron
- Supervise the orientation and training of department staff,
- Keep equipment in good repair and maintain documentation of all activities,
- Periodically audit processes to assure that test results are accurate and reported promptly and meet the needs of healthcare providers,
- Conduct competency assessments and performance evaluations as required by the employer,
- Review and update all department policies and procedures annually.
- Notify infection prevention and clinical staff of epidemiological significant lab results e,g: multi drug resistant organisms.
- Consult with healthcare providers in selecting and interpreting microbiology/immunology test results and proper antibiotic use; assist department staff with performance and interpretation of complex or problematic procedures and instrument troubleshooting,
- Assure that all lab test results suggestive of communicable diseases are reported to the local or state health departments as required in NJ State Administrative Code,
- Prepare current, clinically relevant, cost-effective policies and procedures related to microbiology and immunology that meet the needs of the clinical staff.
- Maintain an adequate level of supplies, reagents and equipment parts,
- Report results to the laboratory QA committee,
- General and technical supervision of the microbiology/immunology laboratory and reference lab assistants.
- Coordinate with infection prevention program and antibiotic stewardship program to prevent transmission of infectious diseases and multi-drug resistant organisms,
