As a Medical Underwriter, you will learn to analyze new business health insurance applications in order to assess risk of future claims for Our Company at an experienced level position. You must be an experienced medical underwriter, trainable to learn our in-house guidelines and systems, self-motivated, able to work independently, confident in making your own decisions, have the ability to analyze medical information, work well with other team members, communicate effectively orally and written.
This position is exempt/salary full-time (40 hours/week) Monday - Friday. Employees are required to work normal business hours of 8am-6pm Thursdays and 8am-5pm M-W & Friday. Thursday’s employees will be required to work 8am-6pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime or weekends.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Review/Analyze Evidence of Insurability and determine appropriate course of action (e.g., request requirements, approve, rate, decline)
- Assess Medical Risk for the Company
- Communicate decisions/outcomes to applicable audiences (e.g., employer, applicant, agent, internal business partner)
- Apply appropriate medical underwriting criteria to determine insurability, based upon in-house underwriting guidelines
- Review/Analyze medical history of relevant populations (e.g., medical applications, APS, exams, claims history) to correctly and completely identify medical risk or potential increased risk of morbidity or mortality
- Responding to internal and external queries regarding application submissions
- Completing additional tasks and special projects as needed
- Complete an average of 80 files per day

Required Qualifications:
- Proficiency in medical terminology, prescription name/usage, vendor systems (e.g., MIB, Milliman, ExamOne) and ability to learn our in-house system
- Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure
- Proven effective analytical and problem-solving skills, sound judgement, solid decision-making ability and confidence to make difficult decisions
- 2+ years of experience working as medical underwriter
- Live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service
- Adhere to attendance policy
- Performing daily work using health insurance industry software
- Dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provide information privacy
- High School Diploma/GED
- Willing and able to work full-time 8am-6pm Thursdays, 8am-5pm M-W & Friday
- Reside within Central Time Zone
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word (updating/editing workbooks), Outlook (receiving/sending emails) and TEAMs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working as a telecommuter
- Experience working in health insurance industry
