Job Description

The Advanced Materials and Microsystems Group (G81) works at the convergence of materials science and micro- and nanoscale engineering to develop microsystems with novel functionality. We develop materials, microfabrication processes, and multifunctional microsystems, with the aim to leverage properties at the small scale in everything we do. Our activities range from forming metamaterials and phase-change materials, to integrating optoelectronic devices in unusual form factors such as fibers and fabrics, to developing microfluidic devices based on electrowetting, to creating new materials and new processes for 3D printing. Our application space is equally broad: it encompasses low-cost picosatellites fabricated in a silicon foundry, advanced fibers that can sense and communicate and be woven into clothing, energy-efficient microhydraulic actuators for micro-robotics, optofluidics for enhanced eyewear, and energy storage and energy harvesting components.

The group seeks a materials chemist and scientist to execute synthesis and analysis of exploratory materials and chemicals to enable highly-capable electronic microsystems. Duties will require familiarity with synthetic chemistry, thin film processing, and surface science to lead applied research to develop and test new and alternative materials and processing concepts. Familiarity and ability to work in both research-class laboratories and production-class cleanrooms is highly desirable. In addition to technical skills, the group seeks well-rounded candidates, with the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and give clear, compelling presentations. Further, we seek a candidate with the ability to take initiative, who can work independently, rapidly grasp new concepts, and meet deadlines.

Duties:

  • Synthesize new materials and develop new processes for wide range of electronic microsystems
  • Work in laboratory and cleanroom spaces
  • Make presentations to diverse audiences
  • Write reports, papers, and/or patents as appropriate

Qualifications

  • Experience with design of experiments, data and analysis acquisition
  • Experience working in a semiconductor, MEMS, or other microfabrication setting
  • Hands-on experience with materials synthesis, processing, characterization, failure analysis and metrology
  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials science, or a similar field of study.
  • Familiarity with writing scripts/programming (MATLAB, Python, LabView)
  • Experience with project management
  • Ability to maintain and operate unique processing equipment
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing/3D printing
  • Computational materials science (density functional theory, molecular dynamics, etc.), artificial intelligence, machine learning
