PPG has an exciting opportunity available for a Senior R&D Chemist at our Grand Prairie, TX site. As a Senior R&D Chemist your primary responsibility will lead new developments in polymeric materials for Aerospace Transparencies. You will need experience to aid them in quickly developing expertise in resins, urethanes, high clarity and uniform optics, impact resistant materials and related manufacturing process implementation. You are expected to use their experiences to execute new developments to expand PPG’s Aerospace Transparency capabilities. You will report to the Global Director of Transparency Engineering and Tech.
Key Responsibilities:
- Help develop new materials, substitute materials, and new processes for use in transparency manufacturing and operations.
- Provide subject domain expertise on materials and processes failures.
- Lead development of new materials from ideation to development and launch into manufacturing.
- Create material and application process specifications.
- Communicate technical advice to internal and external Customers.
- Remain current on new developments in the appropriate scientific fields.
- Provide leadership on root cause analysis for production issues encountered in scale-up and manufacturing of products in subject domain.
- Expected to independently lead projects with variable team member backgrounds.
- Demonstrates strong communication skills at all levels through report writing, presentations, asking questions and seeking information where needed.
- Performs experiments to develop new products for urethanes, polymers, composites, or other business driven needs.
- Shows good record-keeping methods and submits weekly and monthly reports.
- Is a good team member and supports others where needed and possible.
- Uses appropriate analytical tools for tasks. For example, use: DOE, Capability Analysis, ANOVA to problem solve or improve development.
- Introduces improvements or product development alone or with teams with a potential benefit to company of >$200k per year in revenue or improved profitability.
- Capability of operating and guiding others in use of analytical equipment necessary for job.
- Experimental and laboratory bench skills with success in developing new skills to solve problems and advance product technology independently.
- Demonstrates a desire to take on new projects and support where needed.
- Gets authorization before starting tasks and asks questions before continuing with an unclear assignment.
- Active participation in 6S (organization and safety) activities.
- Ability to complete tasks within a reasonable and agreed upon schedule.
- Follows all procedures and safety requirements.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years’ experience in a polymer R&D environment.
- Execution of multiple technology developments from development, scale-up and support in manufacturing,
- Experience with resin formulation development, particularly urethane-based chemistry.
- Thorough understanding of maintaining safety in a lab environment.
- Ability to present and communicate with a broad audience, including upper management, scientists, engineers, and operators.
- Relevant software skills, which may include: Six Sigma software (JMP/Minitab); advanced Microsoft Office / spreadsheet / presentation software skills; literature search software (Endnote, SciFinder, ChemFinder Mendeley, Docear, etc.); project management software (Microsoft Project, JIRA etc.).
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
