Neurotechnology Research Scientist

Make an impact! At Abbott we’re empowering people to manage their health with digital technologies that interface with the nervous system. This opportunity directly supports Abbott’s Neuromodulation business, a fast-growing business, offering the most innovative Spinal Cord and Deep Brain Simulation platforms in the market. Abbott’s Neuromodulation business has a large Product Development site in Plano (Dallas), Texas, where this position is based. Abbott is creating groundbreaking high-quality products designed and built with the betterment of human life as the primary focus. It’s our people who make this all happen. We are thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators working together to constantly challenge the status quo.

The neurotechnology research scientist is responsible for developing and providing subject matter expertise on neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and the interface of technologies with neural structures. This scientist will need to show a strong interest in learning the detailed functions of the central and peripheral nervous system, evaluate and critique information from journal articles, patents, and textbook sources, and form and test hypotheses about the mechanisms of action of neuromodulation technologies. The scientist provides technical expertise, playing a vital role in innovating, designing, enhancing, testing, and implementing technologies that connect with the nervous system. The scientist also works closely with the business to understand what constitutes a successful product design and claims related to that design and its mechanism of action. The scientist also develops scientific experiments to substantiate those claims. By developing and sharing their expertise, the scientist ensures that rigorous and valid scientific information is being used to back data-driven decisions.

DUTIES:

  • Design and carry out research studies to answer key questions related to neuroscience and neurophysiology and medical device mechanism of action.
  • Responsible for developing a deep understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, including an understanding of the function and interactions between neurons, support cells, inflammatory processes, populations of neurons, and neural pathways.
  • Bring expertise in technical writing, presentation skills, organization of research, and literature summaries.
  • Responsible for developing a deep understanding of different disease states and the various theories for how these pathologies develop.
  • Help to develop a vision for new neurotechnology products in an agile, fast moving environment
  • Works with cross-functional teams, product management, development, quality and operations to create innovative presentations, hypotheses, and research studies that form the overall strategy and business architecture
  • Assess complex technical challenges, and define the solutions required to make forward progress without sacrificing integrity and quality
  • Coordinate knowledge sharing and brainstorming related to neuroscience and neurophysiology across the organization
  • Perform research and discovery using best practices and maintain a highly organized database of literature and information about neuroscience topics
  • Contribute to team excellence by identifying and correcting erroneous statements, incorrect information, and logical flaws that may be presented by others
  • Engage non-technical business stakeholders to understand business needs to define technical topics and innovate next generation products.
  • Mentor cross-functional teams on neuroscience, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and psychology
  • Interface with external partners to design, execute, and present research studies
  • Support execution of clinical and preclinical studies including work with cross-functional teams to develop study objectives, study documentation, and study processes that lead to successful collection of data and fulfilment of research objectives
  • Maintains a strong ability to understand logic and precision of speech to support a rationale and logical path of thought
  • Develops a strong understanding of past neuromodulation technologies that have been attempted and the root causes of the failures
  • Present scientific hypotheses, research information, and results both internally and externally including at conferences and with research institutions.
  • Learns to identify logical fallacies and avoid common research pitfalls
  • Provide data to senior management on the new trends in neuromodulation and brain-computer interfaces. Serves as technical expert on new products in these areas.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with the components of neuromodulation systems including design, testing, manufacturing, or quality documentation.
  • Experience with the basic tactics of designing and executing research studies.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering (with neural experience), Neuroscience, Psychology, or other related technical field. Master's degree or PhD in a technical field preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience as an engineer or scientist contributing to development of neuromodulation products or execution of pre-clinical or clinical research (inclusive of research fellowships and internships).
  • Basic understanding of statistical methods for analyzing and drawing conclusions from research data
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the medical device design process and the complexities of interfacing medical products with human anatomy and behavior.
