GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Mammographer is responsible for performing quality mammographic examinations, following all state and federal regulations. The Mammographer uses radiation to produce images for screening or diagnostic procedures for detection of breast disease. The Mammographer also performs advanced exams such as needle localizations. Mammographers ensure technical quality of procedures and maintain knowledge of quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), and other regulatory guidelines, and are responsible for monitoring and maintaining essential patient care and safety including practicing ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Job duties specific to this position:
- Follows radiation safety policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Seeks out Interpreter Services if needed.
- Labels, marks and dates images and sends to PACS accurately.
- Greets patients politely and efficiently and explains the procedures.
- Prepares, utilizes and operates mammography equipment and rooms. Maintains and organizes supplies and equipment.
- Follows sterile techniques according to hospital policy.
- Performs mammographic procedures, including biopsies and interventional exams in an efficient, timely manner according to department policies and procedures.
- Reports problems with equipment or supplies to supervisor.
- Follows quality control assurance procedures according to department, state and federal regulations and keeps supporting documentation.
- Obtains, completes and reviews patient consent forms prior to starting procedures.
- Completes and maintains patient records and documentation. This includes records of quality assurance and quality control.
- Performs all duties following professional standard and according to department, hospital, local, state and federal regulations and/or policies.
- Wears personal dosimetry badges.
- Performs examinations, processes images and completes documentation thoroughly, accurately and in a timely manner.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Ability to follow procedures and policies.
- Ability to use radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to process, review and evaluate images and computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.
- To work unsupervised must comply with all current state and federal regulations.
- Ability to position and immobilize patient on examining table.
- Ability to explain procedures to patients while keeping them relaxed and comfortable, and observe patients to ensure safety and comfort during exam.
- Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.
- Ability to operate mammographic equipment to safely produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes. Ability to record, process and maintain thorough and accurate patient data, and medical histories.
EDUCATION:
- Graduate of an accredited school in radiological technology.
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous mammography experience preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC. :
- Must be ARRT registered or registry eligible. Must have and maintain current CPR certification.
- Must be licensed in MA for mammography or eligible.
