Under general supervision, performs a variety of Vascular and Neuro Interventional procedures to obtain optimum quality Radiography in Vascular Angiography and Neuroradiology with the least amount of discomfort and radiation to the patient.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Determines correct exposure factors and safe radiation practices. Operates all radiographic fluoroscopic and medical equipment in designated areas, including image
intensifier and contrast power injector.
Positions all patients for exams, sets up tray using sterile technique, preps patient, and monitors radiation dose and contrast media when necessary.
Assists radiologist with operation of room and ancillary equipment, pulling of supplies required for procedure, and scrubbing in for procedure assistance when necessary.
Coordinates with department and hospital personnel using proper communication.
Completes patient records for all cases, recording patient and exam information, and billing information, including supply and contrast usage.
Greets patients, explains procedure to be performed, confirms patient allergies with IR nurse, and participates in pre-procedure time-out for patient and exam verification.
Responsible for overall condition of exam room to which assigned, such as supply inventory, procedure performance, and safety of equipment.
Performs duty of stocking of supplies and inventory as required.
Assists in the development of new techniques and procedures, including research, and assists in the training and orientation of residents, technologists, and students.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Minimum of two years of experience in an Interventional lab, preferably with Neuro and Vascular experience.
Massachusetts State Radiologic Technologist License required.
Registry in the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists required; Vascular Interventional specialty is preferred.
Associates Degree required; Bachelors Degree preferred.
BLS certification required.
Ability to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of a wide variety of Interventional Radiology procedures and equipment.
Ability to communicate with patients and all personnel involved in procedures and operation of department in order to effectively coordinate and expedite a successful examination.
Must have proper knowledge of medical equipment used routinely and in emergency situations.
Ability to work under stressful and high-pressure situations, as the majority of Interventional Radiology procedures are high-risk and/or emergency patients.
Frequent lifting of patients and pulling and pushing of light to heavy equipment.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served in assigned area.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The hazards of radiation, on-going and cumulative with the use of fluoroscopy and digital imaging.
Frequent exposure to blood and body fluids with possible risk of infection.
Necessary wearing of lead shielding for most procedures.
Most of the day is spent standing or walking.
Constant contact with patients and physicians.
