GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
An employee in this class performs lead worker, journey level electrical work installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and designing electrical systems and equipment. The employee works independently and directs subordinate helpers and crews during projects. The employee is expected to have advanced knowledges and experiences in electrical work, and serve as the department’s subject matter expert in electrical repair and installation projects. Duties may also include work in other trades areas such as building trades, carpentry, mechanical and plumbing fields. Work assignments are received through supervisory personnel and established work order processes, and completion of work is performed independently and with the expectation that a broad knowledge of the trade field is applied. Employees are subject to working in inside and outside environments, extreme temperatures, and hazards in the work including exposures to loud noises, vibrations, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Duties may expose employees to human body fluids and thus they are subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. Workers are also subject to work in close quarters such as crawl spaces and small rooms. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for lasting quality, effectiveness, appearance, and functionality through conference, inspection, and a review of records.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Evaluates job requests, prioritizes requests, determines materials and labor requirements, completes assignments and installs as required.
- Install, maintain and repair electrical equipment and circuits such as wire, conduit, switches, outlets, junction boxes, transformers, motors, and generators
- Develops and maintains a working knowledge of existing and proposed county buildings and facilities.
- Isolate and correct malfunctions in equipment and circuits of a routine recurring nature; uses diagnostic equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, and circuit analyzers.
- Follows a predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance on equipment and circuits to check for proper operation, loose connections, overheating, leaking, insulation, arcing, deterioration, cleanliness, vibration, alignment, and lubrication.
- Performs electrical repair and installation work on appliances, timing devices, electric heating units, exhaust systems, smoke detectors, fire alarms and thermostats.
- Performs manual labor tasks including material handling, maintaining shop area, stocking and organizing supplies and tools.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Works as a senior member or member of a crew to perform journey and advanced level electrical work in the installation, repair, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical systems and equipment.
- Performs work in other trades areas such as carpentry, plumbing and or building trades fields.
- Equipment following established procedures.
- Provides lead worker functions for crew; organizing workflow, equipment and diagnosing difficult situations.
- Performs preventive maintenance monitoring and preventive repairs.
- Cuts, threads, bends, and installs conduit.
- Test, maintain, and repair all emergency electrical equipment.
- Disassembles, cleans, repairs, and reassembles electrical motors and related

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from high school supplemented by technical course work in electronics or electrical trade skills. 3 to five years considerable related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of valid North Carolina CDL driver’s license is required. If you do not have a valid North Carolina CDL driver’s license at the time of employment, you will have twelve months to obtain the North Carolina CDL driver’s license.
- Skill in the use and care of assigned tools and equipment.
- Ability to direct the work of subordinate staff and crews.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public.
- Thorough knowledge of safety regulations, occupational hazards and related safety precautions in the work.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to diagnose and repair problems and plan and organize appropriate corrective action.
- Ability to exercise independent initiative.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the electrical trades.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of related building, plumbing, carpentry and mechanical trades.
- Certification as a licensed electrician.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to operate equipment and distinguish details, read and interpret manuals and guidelines relating to electronic equipment, use measuring and testing devices, assemble and fabricate parts, and prepare simple records.
