Duties

The Nurse Mammography Navigator is a registered nurse responsible for identifying, facilitating, and coordinating patient-centered care and services. The mammography navigator has a crucial role in assisting women veterans to efficiently obtain gender specific services and care, with emphasis on breast imaging screening/diagnostic care coordination/follow up, coordination of outsourced breast imaging/follow-up. The nurse mammography navigator functions as a liaison and is responsible for planning, coordinating, and performing a wide range of clinical, administrative, program, and technical functions to support quality case management of gender-specific services for veterans. The mammography navigator works directly with the patients, VA staff, non-VA care providers and organizations, Radiology Departments, Care in the Community, Lead Interpreting Physician, Women Veterans Program Manager and Women's Health Medical Director to achieve seamless care, facilitate patient satisfaction, reduce duplication of services or delay of care, and monitor quality of care and services received. The registered nurse is responsible and accountable for the provision of direct and indirect care and for the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse Veteran population. The registered nurse possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process with collaborative, interdisciplinary, evidence-based practice, which will enable effective care coordination and implementation of health promotion and disease prevention practices.
Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Sending all appropriate imaging from the MEDV AMC to community imaging providers, receiving imaging and reports from community care providers, and navigating the patient to care so that there is minimal to no delay in care.
  • Coordinating and tracking of breast imaging for patients throughout all aspects of the medical center, including Community Based Outpatient Clinics, as well as community vendors and/or agencies.
  • Educates patient and family to the intervention or diagnostic examination and discharge care.
  • Assisting with initial VA consult referrals for breast imaging for the patient with an appropriate provider, to include coordinating any subsequent appointments or follow-up, as needed.
  • Entering the BI-RADS from all community-based breast imaging (mammogram, breast ultrasound, breast MRI) into the Radiology package and ensuring that the appropriate follow up care is coordinated for the patient according to the radiologist's recommendations.
  • Assisting veterans who have presented to VA or non-VA emergency department for breast imaging. Coordinating care with the Veterans PACT, breast imaging department and breast imaging departments in the community when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with the team members of the various modalities in achieving completion of intervention or diagnostic examination.
  • Contacting patients who fail to keep mammogram appointments, or who are delinquent in obtaining recommended breast cancer or other diagnostic screenings, to determine and resolve obstacles the veteran may have with keeping appointments.
  • Educating patients on the importance of breast imaging

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Preferred Experience:
  • AHA BLS and AHA ACLS
  • Specialty Certification preferred
  • At least 3 years of documented patient navigation professional experience, with background in breast imaging & ICU. Breast navigator certification preferred.
  • BSN is preferred.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.
