Job Description

The University of Southern California (USC) department of Financial and Business Services (FBS) is seeking a Mail and Material Handler I to join its team with Mailing and Material Management Services. Business Services is comprised of Strategic Sourcing, Procurement Services, Supplier Diversity Services, Disbursement Control and Accounts Payable, Business Operations, Sponsored Projects Accounting, and Mailing and Material Management Services.

Mailing and Material Management is comprised of Mailing Services, Material Management, the Mail Stop and Surplus Sales. These units provide the USC community of students, faculty, staff and affiliates with the pickup, delivery and processing of mail, materials, gas cylinders, freight shipments, overnight courier services, storage space and the operation of 2 retail units.

The Work You Will Do

Receives, sorts and processes mail, packages and other items for university departments. Makes

deliveries and pick-ups as required.

The Mail and Material Handler I:

  • Operates material handling equipment such as pallet jacks and forklifts.
  • Documents delivery data in accordance with departmental procedures which include the use of electronic handhelds and computerized or automated tracking system.
  • In the event of an emergency, the employee holding this position is required to “report to duty” in accordance with the university’s Emergency Operations Plan and/or the employee’s department’s emergency response and/or recovery plans. Familiarity with those plans and regular training to implement those plans is required. During or immediately following an emergency, the employee will be notified to assist in the emergency response efforts, and mobilize other staff members if needed.
  • Verifies merchandise shipments received against purchase orders and/or packing slips. Checks merchandise for possible damage.
  • Operates computerized postage meter scales to determine appropriate postage.
  • Sorts, researches and processes all mail, packages and other items.
  • Special handling.
  • Collects and delivers all classes of mail and other materials, including palletized goods, bulk or heavy items and crated materials. Makes deliveries and pick-ups, as required. Operates university vehicles for deliveries and pick-ups, as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
  • Maintains inventory records and prices of goods, as necessary. Processes all forms of payment including checks and credit cards. Prepares paperwork for deposit.
  • Maintains appropriate records regarding postage, parcels and mail requiring
  • Processes UPS and FedEx and other shipments using software for online shipping.
  • Transfers materials from storage facility to ordering department and/or relocates materials within storage facility using hand truck, forklift or other material handling equipment.

Job Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the position of Mail and Material Handler I meets the following preferred qualifications:

  • Mail handling/processing and/or material handling/processing
  • 6 – 12 months of related experience

All candidates for the position of Mail and Material Handler I must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • 0 - 6 months of related experience
  • Prior customer service experience
  • Must have experience using desktop PC or laptop.
  • Combined work experience and education as equivalent
  • High school or equivalent
  • Basic knowledge of Word and Excel.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION pertinent to this specific position:

  • Acceptable driving record per university requirements.
  • Drug screening required prior to employment and random tests thereafter.
  • Valid CA Driver’s License is required.

The hourly rate range for this position is $19.15 - $20.52.
