Job Description
REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the job of Linehandler at Port Everglades.

There are currently 2 shifts available:
3:45 PM - 12:15 AM
11:45 PM - 8:15 AM
*Must be able to work weekends and holidays*

General Description

Performs manual work involved in the securing and removing of ship's dock lines at Port Everglades.
Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
No experience required.

Special Certifications and Licenses
  • Ability to secure and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification card (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and for the duration of employment.
  • Requires the ability to swim (successful candidate must pass a swim assessment).
  • Ability to secure and maintain a valid Seaport Business Purpose Credential for the duration of employment.

Preferences
  • 2 year of experience handling lines to dock/undock vessels.
  • 2 years of experience in safely operating small commercial marine vessels.
  • 2 years of experience as a United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine seaman.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

  • Pull and throw heaving lines from ships docking/sailing.
  • Perform related work as required
  • Clean the docks, trucks, office and berth.
  • Pull mooring lines down the dock and securing to bollards. Also, remove mooring lines from bollards.
  • Drive and maintain line handling equipment.
  • Tie down ships in berth and release ships from berth.
  • Dock and sail vessels.
  • Catch and throw heaving lines from ships docking.

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery.
