BASIC FUNCTION:
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Claremont McKenna College invites applications for a Language Resident in Korean expected to begin August 20, 2023 and to extend through May 30, 2024. The Language Resident will work with course instructors in Korean language classes, teach small-group conversation classes, and organize Korean program events with the instructors. The position will be a term appointment for one academic year, with the possibility of renewal dependent on performance and department needs.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the course instructors in Korean, the Language Resident performs or works independently/collaboratively to perform the following duties and responsibilities:
Lead language conversation classes : 10 to 12 sessions of weekly small-group conversation classes per semester. Well-organized teaching materials from previous years are available. Resident is responsible for preparing their classes, including the lesson plans and gathering of necessary materials. Students will practice with the language resident the materials covered in regular classes. The conversation classes, hence, should be taught in coordination with regular courses. Conduct two weekly language tables (2 hours). Resident ought to brainstorm conversation topics and actively seek to talk with different groups of students. Meet weekly with faculty advisors to discuss teaching plans, resident duties, potential activities, and any concerns. Hold two hours of office hours weekly for assisting students. Organize cultural activities (often with the course instructors) such as cooking Korean dishes with students, dinner nights, game nights, film screenings, and possible outings in the target language; Participate in Korea-related events including Korean Club events on campus. Act as cultural coordinator; encourage students to use their language skills, exchange cultural ideas, and help students explore culture through the use of a range of media (i.e., films, music, and the internet). Attend departmental meetings when necessary. Report all hours worked in the Workday attendance
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
EDUCATION:
A minimum Bachelor’s degree preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Candidates must have native or near-native fluency in Korean. Experience teaching Korean or any other language and degree related to Korean language and culture, language teaching, and (applied) linguistics are preferred.
HOURS: The regular hours for this position will be limited up to 20 hours per week. Hours may vary due to needs of the department.
