Job Description

The primary purpose of this position, IT SPECIALIST (SYSADMIN), GS-2210-05/12, is to serve as a senior systems administrator in the Software Engineering Group and Mission Critical Computer Resources group, with responsibility for planning and coordinating the installation, testing, modifying, upgrading, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of systems. Responsibilities Perform service as a senior systems administrator. Provide technical guidance and instruction to users and other IT specialists. Serve as senior technical advisor to management. Maintain liaison with manufacturers, professional organizations, and counterparts at other installations and services regarding available products and state-of-the-art technologies and advancements. Apply methods and practices for troubleshooting, recovering, adjusting, modifying, and improving systems to solve complex problems, and provide support that minimizes interruptions in service to customers. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, IOR for the GS-2210, Information Technology (IT) Management Series (Alternative A). Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. TARGETED POSITIONS: This position is a developmental position. This position may be filled at any grade level. Individual selected may be promoted without further competition, upon meeting all legal and regulatory requirements. Starting salary indicated on this vacancy announcement is for the (GS-05). Attainment of knowledge, skills, and abilities is required before promotion to the next higher grade and is dependent on demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the next higher grade level, meeting all regulatory requirements, and recommendation for promotion by the supervisor. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. GS-5 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) or will have one year within 120 days of closing of this announcement, of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-4), or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes planning and scheduling the installation of new or modified hardware and operating systems and applications software and managing accounts, network rights, and access to systems and equipment. OR EDUCATION: Applicant must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems, or networks. OR EDUCATION: Applicant must have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. OR EDUCATION: Applicant must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Examples of specialized experience includes managing the installation and integration of systems fixes, updates, and enhancements and/or ensuring the rigorous application of information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of systems administration services. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices for integrating information system components sufficient to plan, coordinate, and administer computer systems, und optimize system performance. Knowledge of the latest advancements in technology to initiate corrective or preventative action to ensure optimum performance of the system. Knowledge of performance tuning tools, database management, and project management methods sufficient to optimize systems performance, troubleshoot database performance problems, and perform a wide range of systems administration functions. Knowledge of operating systems associated devices, and the interoperability of systems sufficient to install, upgrade, troubleshoot, test, and maintain those systems to optimize the functionality and performance of systems; and to ensure the availability, integrity, efficiency, and reliability of servers. Additional Information Hill Air Force Base provides worldwide engineering and logistics management for the F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, and the Minuteman III ICBM, and performs depot maintenance of the F-16, A-10, and C-130 Hercules aircraft.
