Position Summary

As Head of Procurement your primary focus is to establish and maintain an excellent working relationship with our ocean carrier partners. This is particularly important to obtain the best possible buying conditions and to ensure profitable and sustainable growth on multiple ocean trade lanes.

The Head of Procurement will support the Marine Logistics and Reefers Business Units alongside other team members on the expanding pricing team.

Please note that this role is on-site in Hialeah, FL. A hybrid option might be available after 90 days of work.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Collaborate, assist and support internal operation and customers
• Stay informed on competitors and market news
• Obtain and maintain a strong knowledge and understanding of the customer supply chain in order to provide the best solution towards their needs
• Ensure correct billing and pricing rates are applied to shipment
• Assist in filing rates with NRA when cargo is shipped on BWS house bill of lading
• Draft guidance for internal customers on contract renewals, general quotes etc.
• Collaborate with all levels of the organization to identify best practices for continuous improvement of our client’s network and pricing quality, leading to more favorable profit
• Assist team members as needed and set an example for others
• Maintain and ensure validity of contracts and tariffs are current
• Manage, complete and respond to RFPs in accordance with assigned due dates or service level agreements for new and existing customers in a specific mode, product, or trade lane
• Maintain a strong and respectful line of communication with teams, clients, vendors and carriers
• Keep operational teams updated on the latest market developments to ensure that the ocean freight business practices are aligned with the latest market developments
• Use the BW Portal daily to stay connected with important company information
• Establish and maintain working relationship with ocean carrier partners to obtain the best possible buying conditions to ensure profitable and sustainable growth on multiple ocean trade lanes
• Work closely with the other departments to best handle customer request and find best solution and routing
• Carry out other duties as appropriate and as assigned by manager
• Follow up on rate quotes to increase conversion rates
• Lead the Procurement & Pricing Coordinator in their role
• Provide support and assistance to offer best transport solutions to customer needs
• Create quotes/offers and upload all rates in CRM – Dynamics using proper format
• Negotiate best possible contract rates and terms with ocean carriers for both long-term fixed and Spot FAK business

Position Requirements

• Capable of adjusting communication style to the different types of personalities towards customers, business network connections, managers, and colleagues
• Ability to evaluate existing processes, identify improvements and implement improved methods
• Ability to follow the set goals and tactical plans from Management and team leaders
• Forwarding and ocean procurement experience
• Spanish preferred
• Ability to take team members’ suggestions to improve departmental procedures
• Comfortable managing complex spreadsheets
• 3 years of forwarding and ocean procurement experience preferred
• Strong understanding of ocean procurement and ocean rates
• Ability to plan the workday to minimize overtime
• Ability to think analytically and interpret data to make fact-based decisions or recommendations
• Strong customer focus with the ability to effectively communicate with customers and meet their needs
• English language fluency (written and verbal)
• Proactive mindset and strong problem solving skills to troubleshoot any mishaps that may occur in a shipment with routing changes etc.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel including the VLOOKUP function
• Experience leading a team
• Strong negotiation skills to negotiate best possible transport rates with carriers for most optimal profit
