The Soldiers' Home in Chelsea is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to fill the position of Food Service Supervisor I.
Duties and Responsibilities: (These duties are a general summary and not all inclusive.)
- Makes recommendations to supervisors concerning food service activities
- Oversee food service activities including the preparation and serving of food.
- Evaluate prepared food for quality and quantity
- Participates in regulatory inspections including meeting with surveyors and providing documentation.
- Meets with vendors.
- Maintains records such as food temperatures, refrigerator/freezer temperatures.
- Inspect food service areas for compliance with applicable state, federal and local codes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ServSafe certification.
- Extensive knowledge of kitchen production, materials, procedures, and methods used in the ordering, planning, preparation and serving of foods.
- Developed sensitivity to the needs of the client population served.
- Competent with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Demonstrated experience with dietary management.
Schedule:
10:30am - 7:00 PM with Tuesday and Wednesday off
About the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea:
The Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea is a Joint Commission accredited inpatient veterans' facility owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is an independent State agency that organizationally reports to the Department of Veterans Services.
The Soldiers' Home addresses the needs and provides support to approximately 350 veterans 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Medical, nursing and clinical supports are given to those residents residing in the Long-Term Care Facility.
The residential units support veterans who are living independently but receive services and programs ranging from psychosocial and social work, receive transitional assistance, education, work and outreach programs.
The resident population is generally categorized into the following categories: Alzheimer, Long Term Care and Domiciliary.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the preparation and cooking of food in a hotel, restaurant, cafeteria, catering firm, government or private institution and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree with a major in restaurant and hotel management, food service management, home economics, nutrition or dietetics may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in restaurant and hotel management, food service management, home economics, nutrition or dietetics may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*
III. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at the high school level or higher, with a major in culinary arts, food services or food trades may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
- Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
