Responsibilities:
As a retail food service worker, you will:
  • Perform the duties of a storekeeper or food service worker as needed
  • Familiarize yourself with food preparation procedures
  • Assist in daily, weekly, and other periodic cleaning and maintenance duties
  • Assist with production, service, and clean-up of special functions on and off campus
  • Maintain the kitchen and food stations in a clean, safe fashion
  • Operate quickly and efficiently during rush periods while prioritizing customer service
  • Prepare food items for service with the established portion sizes, quality, and taste
  • Operate the cash register, point of sale (POS) terminal, or card reader according to departmental procedures
  • Utilize proper storage techniques, including enforcing a first in/first out policy for all food items
  • Enforce established energy conservation techniques and guidelines
  • Practice strong interpersonal skills when fulfilling customer requests and working alongside colleagues
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of Campus Dining and Princeton University
  • Prioritize tasks to meet production deadlines
Qualifications:
  • Moderate physical fitness — as a retail food service worker, you must possess the following:
    • physical agility, full range of motion, and ability to maintain balance
    • the ability to stand or walk up to two hours at one time for a total of 6–8 hours per day
    • the ability to sit for no more than two hours during an 8-hour day, except for cashiers and card checkers who may sit for 2–4 hours at once for a total of 4–6 hours per day
    • the ability to lift or carry up to 30 pounds from the floor to overhead frequently (34–66% of the workday)
    • the ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds from the floor to chest height occasionally (less than 33% of the workday)
    • the ability to push or pull using force up to 50 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday)
    • the ability to use arms and hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, or pulling with force up to five pounds continuously (67–100% of the workday), and up to 30 pounds frequently (34–66% of the workday)
    • the ability to bend, squat, kneel, climb, and reach or lift overhead occasionally (less than 33% of the work day)
    • the ability to work under a range of temperature conditions (e.g., kitchens, walk-in refrigerators, freezers, etc.)
  • Knowledge of food preparation for a full range of cold foods (salads, produce, deli meats, desserts, etc.) and knowledge of hot food production (steaming, grilling, frying, baking, etc.)
  • The ability to lift or carry up to 30 pounds from the floor to overhead frequently (34–66% of the workday)
  • Ability to work with a variety of kitchen and service equipment (char-broilers, steam jacket kettles, pressure steamers, ovens, woks, grills, slicers, choppers, mixers, blenders, frozen dessert machines, hot and cold beverage dispensers, coffee brewers, espresso/cappuccino machines, flash freezers, card reader, cash register, etc.)
  • The ability to sit for no more than two hours during an 8-hour day, except for cashiers and card checkers who may sit for 2–4 hours at once for a total of 4–6 hours per day
  • Physical agility, full range of motion, and ability to maintain balance
  • The ability to push or pull using force up to 50 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday)
  • Experience in cashiering; skill in presenting and garnishing food
  • A high school diploma/GED; OR completion of the Excelling at Princeton Program and one-year relevant experience; OR five years relevant experience preferably in a collegiate dining environment
  • The ability to stand or walk up to two hours at one time for a total of 6–8 hours per day
  • The ability to use arms and hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, or pulling with force up to five pounds continuously (67–100% of the workday), and up to 30 pounds frequently (34–66% of the workday)
  • The ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds from the floor to chest height occasionally (less than 33% of the workday)
  • The ability to work under a range of temperature conditions (e.g., kitchens, walk-in refrigerators, freezers, etc.)
  • The ability to bend, squat, kneel, climb, and reach or lift overhead occasionally (less than 33% of the work day)
  • Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions
Work Schedule
Retail food service worker is an essential personnel position working 30 hours (75% duty time) per week. Flexibility with scheduling, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays is required. Schedules may be changed due to business needs and work outside the unit may be required.
