The Family Office Controller will be an integral part of the Family Office group and will report directly to the Chief Administrative Officer and the Principals. You’ll be responsible for providing a variety of accounting services while also managing several members of the accounting team.
You’ll be highly detail oriented and innately capable of maintaining high levels of privacy and discretion in all you do. You’ll have strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative and professional demeanor and a solutions oriented approach. You’ll be results driven and help establish and manage accounting activities and plans.
What You’ll Do
- Prepare analytical reports on investments and potential investments
- Develop a close relationship with and become a trusted advisor to family members
- Maintain records and accounting for residences, properties, art collections, vehicles, aircraft, and other personal assets
- Write concise, meaningful, and impactful reports, routinely analyzing all family direct investments
- Lead accounting team staff
- Develop and implement financial controls, policies, and procedures on behalf of the Family Office
- Conduct and/or review daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual bank reconciliations
- Regularly communicate with investment funds for various information
- Closely review all expenses, including personal, taxes, insurance, medical, education, and mortgage payments
- Coordinate funding requests
- Review check writing activity at residences plus related approvals
- Special projects as needed
- Oversee accounting and financial affairs of administrative staff at personal residences
- Coordinate funding of capital calls for investments
- Liaise with Legal, Corporate Accounting, Treasury, Philanthropy, and Tax departments
- Manage and review all bank account and credit card activity
- Financial Planning & Analysis Reporting
- Review intercompany billing and account reconciliation
- Conduct accounting and bookkeeping for all personal and trust transactions
- Prepare reports, data and information necessary for tax accountant to prepare quarterly tax payments and file tax returns
- Generate, review, and approve monthly, quarterly, and annual personal financial statements and variance reports
- Analyze, track, and report on portfolio of investments in stocks, bonds, and other minority investments in private companies
- Resolve any owner / family inquiries, issues, and special requests promptly and accurately, including nights and weekends
- Review and assist with auto, home, earthquake, general liability and other insurance, as necessary
What You'll Bring
- Past investment experience required
- Previous experience leading an accounting team and putting financial controls in place
- 7+ years of accounting experience
- The ability to handle and respond to Principals’ and leadership demands in a timely manner
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field
- Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail
- An understanding of professional services and client service
- 5+ years of financial planning and analysis reporting experience required
- Ability to adhere to the highest level of confidentiality
- Experience with Xero, bill.com, Teamwork (or similar project management platforms)
- Financial services industry and partnership accounting experience is a plus
- CPA preferred
- Excellent prioritization of assignments and effective time management and ability to keep multiple tasks and projects organized and on time
- The ability to be a team player who's also able to work independently
- Previous experience in a Family Office preferred but not required
- 5+ years of leadership experience
